Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What Greek island is generally placed after the name of John, the supposed author of the Book of Revelation?

Answer: Patmos

He is also known as John the Revelator or John the Divine.

The authorship of the Book of Revelation is simply attributed to John and Christian tradition dictates that this is John, the son of Zebedee, the apostle and also the author of the Gospel according to St. John. This is sometimes disputed. Traditional history also informs us that John was banished to the island of Patmos, a small island in the Aegean Sea, by the Romans. It was here that he supposedly had his visions and penned the Book of Revelation.
2. Pontius Pilate has an infamous role in the story of Jesus. What is the role he played?

Answer: He adjudicated on the trial and crucifixion of Jesus

The story of Pontius Pilate is reasonably consistent across all four Gospels: Pilate advocates for Jesus not to be executed, and accedes only when the crowd refuses to accept this judgement. Significantly, he washes his hands to absolve himself of personally condemning Jesus to death, but still sends him anyway.

The sources of information on Pilate's life are found on an inscription known as the Pilate Stone. This inscription verifies Pilate's position as a prefect (judge) but there are different scholastic interpretations on the role Pilate plays in Jesus' trial.
3. One of the symbols attributed to Philip the Apostle is two loaves of bread, which is reportedly linked to the feeding of the multitude, a miracle performed by Jesus Christ.

Answer: True

The feeding of the multitude, where Jesus is described as providing more than enough food for five thousand people after being provided with only five loaves of barley bread and two fish, is recorded in all four of the Gospels. In John 6:7 Philip expresses scepticism about their ability to cater for the people by stating it would take a half a year's wages to buy sufficient bread for each person to take one bite, hence the attribution of the loaves as symbols.

The Gospels go on to indicate that after the people had been sated the disciples picked up twelve baskets full of broken pieces that were left over.
4. In Revelation 2, of what are some in the church at Pergamum accused?

Answer: Following the teachings of Balaam and Nicolaitans

The early chapters of Revelation have a series of letters to churches, each with an admonition, a word of warning and a word of comfort. Pergamum was complimented for many who had remained faithful to the true Word even in the face of persecution; however, there were some in the assembly who had strayed to follow false teachings. Those who remained faithful were to be fed with manna and would be given a white stone with their name carved on it, possibly a reference to the Roman custom of awarding victorious athletes.
5. Priscilla and Aquila travelled with which apostle as "fellow workers in Christ Jesus"?

Answer: Paul

The notation that they were "fellow workers in Christ" appears in Romans 16:3 (NASB).

The pair are mentioned six times in the New Testament in four different books, however, the most significant is in Romans 16:3-4 where Paul acknowledges their contributions to the church and his own indebtedness to them. In Acts 18 they are shown to instruct the great first century evangelist Apollos, showing him the way to God with greater accuracy.
6. Philistine, a land adjacent to Israel is often portrayed at odds with the nearby Israelite population. Which of the following is a Philistine city?

Answer: Gaza

In Deuteronomy there are five city-states recorded. These are Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, Ekron, and Gath. The cities, described as Philistia, represented the Philistine "pentapolis". Deuteronomy goes on to describe them as being warlike and, in Judges 13:1 it adds to this by indicating that the Philistines were suppressors and dominators of the Israelites. To further highlight their conflict, in further chapters we read about Samson, who is portrayed as a champion of the Israelites for killing over a thousand Philistines, armed with merely the jaw bone of an ass. The books of Joshua and Samuel add further of their constant conflicts with the surrounding Israelites, Canaanites and Egyptians.

Gaza, an important stop on the "Spice Route", was conquered by the Philistines in the 12th century BC, taking it from 350 years of Egyptian control.
7. In the Book of Acts, who is said to have fallen to the earth, and heard a voice asking "why persecutest thou me?"

Answer: Saul

This event occurred on the road to Damascus where Saul has a vision of the resurrected Jesus. In this account (Acts 9:1-22) he is blinded for three days, takes no food and spends his days praying. At the end of this period Ananias of Damascus arrives, lays his hand on Saul and his sight is restored. Saul is baptised.

These are part of the events that lead to Saul's conversion. He then changes his name to Paul.
8. According to Genesis 39 (King James Version), Potiphar is a captain of the palace guard to whom Joseph is sold as a slave. Potiphar's wife plays an important role in his story. What is her name?

Answer: It is never revealed

Potiphar makes Joseph, although a slave, his head of the household. Potiphar's wife attempts to seduce Joseph, but he resists and she, furious, accuses him of rape. Potiphar throws Joseph into prison, which suggests that Potiphar may have doubted her story, as the punishment for rape was usually execution. When in prison, Joseph comes under the attention of the Pharaoh and subsequently interprets his dream, which ultimately enables him to be released.

In the Quran Potiphar is referred to by his title, Aziz. The episode occurs around 1544 BC.
9. Paul writes to Philemon regarding welcoming Onesimus back into his household. What was the relationship between Philemon and Onesimus?

Answer: Master and slave

Onesimus had run off from Philemon's household and had travelled to Rome, where he met Paul and became a follower of Christ. Paul, who was pretty old by this time, found Onesimus helpful. So Paul sends a letter to Philemon, also a believer, asking him to forgive Onesimus, and further, to allow Onesimus to return to Paul to give Paul assistance. Though Onesimus is a slave, Paul makes it clear that a good relationship existed between Onesimus and Philemon, which would be strengthened by the fact that they were now brothers in Christ.
10. The Passover commemorates which event in the Bible?

Answer: The liberation of the Jews from slavery in Egypt

This story is detailed in the Book of Exodus where, after years of slavery and numerous endeavours for freedom, the Jews are finally led out of Egypt by Moses.
Passover is celebrated in the Hebrew month of Nisan on the 15th day and runs for seven or eight days, depending on your denomination.

Exodus details God aiding Moses in liberating his people by inflicting ten plagues on Egypt. The last plague would see the first born in every Egyptian household killed. The Israelites were instructed to mark their doors with the blood of a freshly killed spring lamb so that the Lord would "pass over" their house and not inflict this punishment upon them.
