Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sloth was not one of the original eight deadly temptations.

Answer: true

The original list was created by the monk Evagrius Ponticus sometime between 345-399 AD (if anyone has a more precise date please send me a message). It included gluttony, pride, sadness, apathy, avarice, lust, vainglory, and anger. His list was compiled for monks and other holy men.
2. Which two of the original 8 temptations were combined to become sloth?

Answer: apathy and sadness

Pope Gregory the Great refined Evagrius Ponticus' list in 590 AD to include sloth. He combined acedia (apathy) and tristitia (sadness) to create Sloth. Sloth is considered to be a sin because it keeps you from worshipping God (according to Gregory).
3. Which of these is not a characteristic of the sin of sloth?

Answer: wastefulness

Wastefulness is actually a characteristic of gluttony. The sins of laziness and apathy both relate to the failure to worship God. The sin of depression is regarded as the failure to appreciate God and his works.
4. Sometime between 1308 and 1321 AD, Dante Alighieri gave his vision of Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven in his "Divine Comedy". In which of the nine circles of Hell did he place slothful sinners?

Answer: fifth

Dante also placed anger on this level. In his "Divine Comedy" the slothful were made to lie in the river Styx. One of the slothful sinners spoke to Dante and said, "We who were sullen in life now have a pit to be sullen in."
5. The ultimate result of the sin of sloth was suicide. Suicide is considered a grave sin in the Catholic Church. In which of Dante's nine rings of Hell were the people who had committed suicide placed?

Answer: seventh

Dante envisioned that those who committed suicide were turned into trees and had their corpses hung from their branches. The corpses were then torn at by Harpies. The suicidal people were not allowed to speak unless the tree that they had been turned into was broken in any way.
6. The slothful could also be found in Purgatory. According to Dante, what did the slothful have to do to be purged of their sin and ascend to Heaven?

Answer: run continuously

Dante envisioned that the running purged the sinners because they could only stop to ascend to Heaven after they showed a genuine desire to go to Heaven. As with all of the Purgatory punishments, sloth has a unique beatitude that goes "blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted".
7. Which demon was in charge of sloth?

Answer: Belphegor

In 1589 AD, Peter Binsfeld was the first to classify the sins as demonic lords who commanded the legions of Satan's army. Beelzebub is the demon of gluttony. Amon is the demon of anger. Asmodeus is the demon of lust.
8. What color is associated with sloth?

Answer: light blue

Sloth is associated with light blue because the sin is associated with "feeling blue," an excuse for doing nothing. Red is for anger, green is for envy and yellow is for greed; there will be more on why in the later quizzes.
9. Which animal is said to represent sloth?

Answer: Donkey

The donkey is associated with sloth because donkeys are slow-moving, stubborn and lazy. The goat is also a common symbol for sloth. The horse is for pride, the cow is for lust, and the pig is (appropriately enough) for gluttony; those will be covered more in future quizzes.
10. Which of the seven heavenly virtues counteracts sloth?

Answer: diligence

Diligence is the actual virtue. Hard work and labor are just subdivisions of diligence. Humility is used to defeat pride.
