Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was name of the worker in the early church who was stripped, severely beaten with rods and thrown into jail and ended up singing hymns at midnight with Paul?

Answer: Silas

Silas is the correct answer. Acts 16:16-34 gives an account of Silas and Paul being stripped, severely beaten with rods and then being tossed into jail, only to end up singing hymns and praying at midnight. Then an earthquake jolted the prison and all the prison doors were opened, with all the inmates making an escape with the exception of Silas and Paul. Rather than making a break for it, they decided to stay put and used the occasion to convert the jailer and his family to Christianity.

When you read accounts like this, it makes one wonder why people say the Bible is boring.
2. Now take the last three letters of your answer to the previous question to fill in the missing word that appears twice in Matthew 19:30 in the NKJV: "But many who are first will be _______, and the ________ first."

Answer: last

The missing word that appears twice in Matthew 19:30, using the NKJV, is 'last'. Jesus made the statement after he counselled a man known as the rich, young ruler. In his conversation with Jesus, the young man wanted to know what he should do to inherit eternal life. When Jesus told the man he needed to keep the ten commandments, he quickly replied he had done so since he was a child. In Matthew 19:21, Jesus is quoted as telling the man, "if you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." After Jesus made the statement, the rich man walked away disappointed.

Scripture goes on to tell of Jesus making the famous statement: "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

When the disciples questioned Jesus about His teaching, He in turn made the statement featured in the quiz question: "But many who are first will be last, and the last first."
3. Now take the last three letters of your answer to the previous question to fill in the missing word from Mark 1:22 in the NKJV: "And they were __________ at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes."

Answer: astonished

The missing word from Mark 1:22 in the NKJV is 'astonished'. (The NIV states the people were 'amazed' at Christ's teaching.) The verse is part of a passage telling of Jesus entering a synagogue in Capernaum on the Sabbath. During His visit, Jesus would cast out an unclean spirit from an unnamed man.
4. Now take the last three letters of your answer to the previous question to fill in the missing word from Luke 14:23 in the NKJV: "Then the master said to the servant, 'Go out into the highways and ________, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled."

Answer: hedges

The missing word from Luke 14:23 in the NKJV is 'hedges'. (The NIV quotes the master as telling the servant to go out to the roads and country lanes.) The verse is part of the passage known as the Parable of The Great Supper. The parable is found in only the Gospel of Luke. See Luke 14:16-24.
5. Now take the last three letters of your answer to the previous question to fill in the missing word from Isaiah 33:15 in the NKJV: "He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, he who despises the gain of oppressions, who __________ with his hands, refusing bribes, who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed, and shuts his eyes from seeing evil."

Answer: gestures

'Gestures' is the missing word from Isaiah 33:15 in the NKJKV. (The NIV uses the term "keep their hands from accepting bribes".)

The verse is part of a passage telling of impending judgment on Zion. The book of Isaiah was written by a prophet of God with the same name. Isaiah was the son of Amoz and prophesied in Jerusalem during the reigns of four kings of Judah -- Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah.
6. Now take the last three letters of your answer to the previous question to fill in the missing word from Matthew 11:28 in the NKJV: "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you _______."

Answer: rest

The missing word from Matthew 11:28 in the NKJV is 'rest'. The verse is popular with Christians around the world.

To put the verse in context, here's how Matthew 11:28-30 reads: "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."

I remember reading this verse for the first time in my life and being filled with an insatiable thirst to learn more about Christ.

The Gospel of Matthew was written by Matthew, a tax collector who was also known as Levi and was a member of the original Twelve Disciples.
7. Now take the last three letters of your answer to the previous question to fill in the missing word from Galatians 5:4 in the NKJV: "You have become _________ from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace."

Answer: estranged

The missing word from Galatians 5:4 in the NKJV is 'estranged'. (The NIV uses the word 'alienated' rather than estranged.)

To put the verse in context, here's how Galatians 5:4-6 reads in the NKJV: "You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love."

Much of Chapter 5 of Galatians is about Christian liberty and about walking in the spirit.

Galatians was written by Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, and addressed to believers in the early church in Galatia, a community in Asia Minor.
8. Now take the last three letters of your answer to the previous question to answer this question: What was the name of the son of Penuel, as per 1 Chronicles 4:4?

Answer: Gedor

Gedor was the son of Penuel, as per 1 Chronicles 4:4. A second man called Gedor is mentioned in 1 Chronicles 4:18 as well. However, little is known about the two men as they are mentioned in passing reference.

Gedor was also the name of a town, as per 1 Chronicles 4:39.
9. Now take the last three letters of your answer to the previous question to answer this question: What was the name of the woman who was raised from the dead by Peter, as per Acts 9:36?

Answer: Dorcas

Dorcas, also known as Tabitha, was raised from the dead by Peter, as per Acts 9:36-43. According to Scripture, Dorcas was a widow who lived in Joppa and was well known for her good works and charitable deeds. Verse 40 tells of Peter praying beside Dorcas' body and then commanding her to arise. Miraculously, she did just that!

The passage goes on to state many people believed in the Lord as a result of Peter raising Dorcas from the dead.
10. Now take the last three letters of your answer to the previous question to fill in the missing word from John 15:6 in the NKJV: "If anyone does not abide in Me, he is _________ out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned."

Answer: cast

The missing word from John 15:6 in the NKJV is 'cast'. (Rather than use the word 'cast' the NIV uses the term 'thrown away'.)

The verse appears immediately after one of my favorite bible verses, John 15:5. The verse in the NKJV states, "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing."

Jesus made the statements in John 15 at the Last Supper, just before His betrayal in the Garden of Gethsemane.
