The Book of Jonah tells of the prophet Jonah who is instructed by God to prophecy of the destruction of Nineveh. He defies God and flees on a ship to a different city. On the voyage, God calls up a storm and Jonah has the sailors throw him overboard to appease God. Jonah is swallowed up by a sea creature, commonly referred to in Biblical stories as a whale, where he languishes for three days.

He prays to God and is eventually spat out by the creature onto land.
