We Three Kings... Saul, David and Solomon Quiz

Answer: Samuel

In 1 Samuel 9, Samuel anoints Saul. Saul is described as being "without equal" in all of Israel, a head taller than the others.

Saul's father was a man named Kish, son of Abiel.

As 1 Samuel 14:51 says, "Saul's father Kish and Abner's father Ner were sons of Abiel."

Answer: His personal armor

When David went to accept Goliath's challenge, Saul offered his personal armor set of armor to him. David declined the offer because he put his trust in God and the armor would weigh him down. Back in that time, especially for the Israelites, armor was very rare to have. Only the wealthy would have a set.

David was the son of Jesse, Samuel was the son of Elkanah, and Michal was the DAUGHTER of Saul.

Saul was angry at the Philistines, so he bound his army to an oath to not eat before evening came, and he had taken his revenge. His son, Jonathan, had not heard the oath Saul had sworn the army to, and ate some wild honey. One of the soldiers called him out on it, and Jonathan responded saying (1 Samuel 14:29-30):

"My father has made trouble for the country. See how my eyes brightened when I tasted a little of this honey. How much better it would have been if the men had eaten today some of the plunder they took from their enemies. Would not the slaughter of the Philistines have been even greater?""

Answer: Jerusalem

Bethlehem is known as the Town of David. It is possible that King David was born there. This is the same town where Joseph and Mary traveled to in the New Testament, and where Jesus was born. Jerusalem is described as the City of David in 2 Samuel 5:6-9 and other places.

Answer: Bathsheba

David sinned by committing adultery with Bathsheba. He looked at her with lust, and fell into temptation. After he committed adultery, he tried to get her husband, Uriah, to sleep with her and cover it up. When that didn't work, he tried, and succeeded, to have him killed, so he could take Bathsheba as his own wife (2 Samuel:11).

After David declined Saul's armor, he went down to the stream and picked five smooth stones. Some think that he picked five because Goliath had four brothers. Other think that he picked five just in case he missed. (1 Samuel 17:40)

After David had killed Goliath, the people were praising him with the words (1 Samuel 18:7):

"Saul has slain his thousands,
and David his tens of thousands."

This angered Saul because as king, he thought he deserved all the praise.

Answer: Bathsheba

After David and Bathsheba had sinned, and the Lord had taken their first son, Solomon was born as their second son.
1 Kings 11:1 says, "Then Nathan asked Bathsheba, Solomon's mother, 'Have you not heard ...?'"

Answer: Wisdom

2 Chronicles 1:7-10 tells the story:
'That night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, "Ask for whatever you want me to give you." Solomon answered God, "You have shown great kindness to David my father and have made me king in his place. Now, LORD God, let your promise to my father David be confirmed, for you have made me king over a people who are as numerous as the dust of the earth. Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?"

Even though Solomon could have asked for wealth, or a great palace, he asked for wisdom. This pleased God so much that he also gave Solomon wealth, and great splendor.'

Answer: Adonijah

When King David was old and dying, his son Adonijah proclaimed himself king, even though God had wanted Solomon as the next king. Instead, David called in his wife, Bathsheba, and he named their son Solomon the next king. (1 Kings 1:1-27)

When the Queen of Sheba had heard of Solomon's great wisdom and splendor, she traveled all the way to Jerusalem with caravans of spices, gold, and precious stones. After the Queen had asked Solomon questions, and had him explain things to her, she was astonished. She gave him large quantities of gold, spices, and precious stones. (1 Kings 10:1-13)

1 Kings 11:3 tells us, "He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray."

Even though Solomon was gifted with wisdom, foreign wives were his weakness.

1 Kings 5:8 says:
"So Hiram sent word to Solomon:
"I have received the message you sent me and will do all you want in providing the cedar and pine logs."

Hiram, king of Tyre, received a message from Solomon saying that now because there was peace, he could build a temple to the Lord. Hiram had been on friendly terms with David, Solomon's father, so he ordered wood cut and delivered to Solomon.
