Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Matthew 2:13, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream. Where did he instruct him to take Mary and baby Jesus?

Answer: Egypt

This occured soon after the visit from the wise men. Matthew 2:13 says, "Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, 'Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him'." Joseph obeyed what the angel told him and took Mary and Jesus to Egypt where they stayed until the death of Herod. According to Matthew 2:15, this fulfilled the prophecy from Hosea 11:1, which said, "...And out of Egypt I called My son".
2. According to Daniel 7, in the vision that Daniel received in a dream, what did he see rise up out of the Great Sea?

Answer: Four beasts

Daniel had the dream and then wrote down the main details. Daniel 7:2-3 reads, "I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the Great Sea. And four great beasts came up from the sea, each different from the other".

After being troubled by the dream, Daniel asked someone for the interpretation of the dream, and the person replied, "Those great beasts, which are four, are four kings which arise out of the earth" (Daniel 7:17). Here the kings represent different kingdoms.

After the explanation given, Daniel asked of the interpreter more information about the fourth beast which was different. The interpreter replied, "The fourth beast shall be a fourth kingdom on earth, which shall be different from all other kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, trample it and break it in pieces" (Daniel 7:23).

As horrible as the fourth kingdom sounds, Daniel's dream ended with an everlasting kingdom being established by God.
3. In Genesis 41, Joseph interpreted the dream of another person. Who was this person that dreamed of seven fat cows followed by seven thin cows?

Answer: Pharaoh

In Genesis 40, Joseph had interpreted the dreams of the baker and the butler while they were all three in prison. In Genesis 41, the pharaoh had the dream and was troubled upon waking up, so "he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt and all its wise men. And Pharaoh told them his dreams, but there was no one who could interpret them for Pharaoh" (Genesis 41:8).

It was then that the butler remembered Joseph and told Pharaoh about him and Pharaoh called for Joseph. Before Joseph heard Pharaoh's dream, he told Pharaoh, "It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace" (Genesis 41:16).

He then interpreted Pharaoh's dream and Pharaoh was pleased and gave Joseph rule over his house.
4. After he found out that Mary was with child, Joseph was visited by an angel of the Lord in a dream. In Matthew 1:20, the angel told Joseph to not be afraid to take Mary as a wife because the child Mary carried had been conceived by what?

Answer: The Holy Spirit

After Joseph found out that Mary was pregnant, he thought of hiding her away so that she would not be a public example. It was during this time that the angel appeared to him in a dream. In the dream, the angel said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins" (Matthew 1:20-21).

This reassured Joseph and he did take Mary as a wife, but he did not know her until after Jesus was born.

These circumstances fulfilled the prophecy from Isaiah 7:14.
5. When Elihu was speaking to a certain Old Testament figure, he said, "For God may speak in one way, or in another, yet man does not perceive it. In a dream, in a vision of the night. When deep sleep falls upon men, while slumbering on their beds". What was the name of the suffering man to whom Elihu was speaking?

Answer: Job

The quote from the question comes from Job 33:14-15. Elihu thought that God would speak to people in different ways, and that it was possible that Job had not heard what God was saying. According to Elihu, the first way that God speaks to man is through dreams, with the second way being through suffering. Elihu said to Job, "Man is also chastened with pain on his bed, and with strong pain in many of his bones" (Job 33:19). Elihu spoke this way to Job because he thought that Job was not righteous. Elihu felt that God spoke to man "in order to turn man from his deed, and conceal pride from man" (Job 33:17).

He interpreted Job's physical suffering as a form of God's discipline.
6. When Pilate had to make a decision about whether Jesus or Barabbas would be released from prison, someone close to him had a nightmare because they knew Jesus was innocent (Matthew 27:19). What was this person's relationship to Pilate?

Answer: His wife

Pilate's wife knew that Jesus was innocent and suffered a nightmare because of this. Matthew 27:19 reads, "While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, 'Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him'." Even though Pilate knew Jesus was innocent and had only been given over to authorities out of jealousy (according to verse 18), the people still asked for Barabbas to be released instead of Jesus.

After the people insisted that Jesus be crucified, Pilate washed his hands and said, "I am innocent of the blood of this just Person. You see to it" (Matthew 27:24).
7. 1 Kings 3 tells of how God appeared to Solomon in a dream and asked him what he would like God to give him. What did Solomon ask for?

Answer: Wisdom

1 Kings 3:9 reads, "Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?" God was pleased with Solomon's answer, and he said, "Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked long life for yourself, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice, behold, I have done according to your words; see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you" (1 Kings 3:11-12). God also gave Solomon riches and honor, and promised to make his days long if he kept his commandments and followed in David's footsteps.
8. Peter's sermon on the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2:17 recalled the words of one of the Old Testament prophets when he said, "And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams". Which Old Testament prophet originally spoke these words?

Answer: Joel

Peter's sermon was delivered after the crowd had a response that was full of shock and mocking upon seeing the result of the arrival of the Holy Spirit. He recalled the words spoken by the prophet Joel, "And it will come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions" (Joel 2:28). Peter's sermon to the crowd was to explain how what they were witnessing was the fulfillment of Joel's prophecy. Dreams and visions would be a couple of the effects brought on by the arrival of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost.
9. Genesis 28:12 reads, "Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it". Which Biblical person dreamed of this ladder?

Answer: Jacob

After Jacob left his home to go to his uncle Laban to choose a wife, the Bible says that he came to a certain place where he spent the night and dreamed. In the dream, God stood at the top of the ladder and spoke to Jacob saying, "I am the Lord God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants. Also your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad to the west and the east, to the north and the south; and in you and in all your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed" (Genesis 28:13-14).

This was God's promise to Jacob that he would receive the blessings promised in God's covenant with Abraham.
10. According to Zechariah 10:2, what type of dreams do diviners tell?

Answer: False

Zechariah 10:1-2 reads, "Ask the Lord for rain in the time of the latter rain. The Lord will make flashing clouds; He will give them showers of rain, grass in the field for everyone. For the idols speak delusion; the diviners envision lies, and tell false dreams; they comfort in vain.

Therefore the people wend their way like sheep; They are in trouble because there is no shepherd". According to the Study Bible for Women (NKJV), in this passage Zechariah is warning "Israel's leaders about their idolatry, while encouraging the people".

The message here is that only God can truly provide for the people, and the people need leadership that leans on God and not on false idols.
