Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 2 Samuel 22:2 tells of a king making the following statement: "The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer." Who made the statement?

Answer: David

David is the correct answer. The 22nd chapter of 2 Samuel is devoted to a song of praise David composed on the heels of God delivering him from the hands of King Saul.

Here's how the first two verses go:
"The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
The God of my strength, in whom I will trust;
My shield and the horn of my salvation,
My stronghold and my refuge;
My Savior, You save me from violence.
I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised;
So shall I be saved from my enemies."

David's song has been set to modern music and is often performed in various denominations of Christian churches.
2. Scripture quotes a woman making the following statement to her husband: "Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Curse God and die!" Who made the statement?

Answer: Job's wife

The correct answer is Job's wife, who is not named in Scripture. The statement appears in Job 2:9. In verse 10, Job responds to his wife, stating, "you speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?"

There is no further mention of her in Scripture. However, Job 1:2 states Job had 10 children -- seven sons and three daughters. It is assumed he had one wife and she was the mother of all the children, but there is no clear indication.

Job's life, of course, was turned upside down and inside out, when a series of calamities beset him. Through it all, Job remained faithful to God and the book of Job concludes with his life being abundantly blessed by God.
3. Judges 16:10 tells of a woman making the following statement to her lover: "Look, you have mocked me and told me lies." Who made the statement?

Answer: Delilah

Delilah is the correct answer. She made the statement to her lover Samson after she unsuccessfully attempted to find the secret of his brute strength. In fact, there would be two more unsuccessful attempts by Delilah before she would finally discover the secret to his strength.

Judges 16:17-22 tells of Samson informing Delilah his unshaved hair was the secret to his strength and after he fell asleep she had his hair cut and he lost his strength.

Samson would be taken captive by the Philistines, but he would have one final moment of triumph. While the Philistine rulers were offering "a great sacrifice" to Dagon their god, it was decided to bring out Samson for entertainment purposes. A crucial mistake was made when Samson was placed by the pillars that supported the temple. Judges 16:30 in the NKJV Bible states: "Then Samson said, 'Let me die with the Philistines!' And he pushed with all his might, and the temple fell on the lords and all the people who were in it. So the dead that he killed at his death were more than he had killed in his life."
4. Scripture tells of a man issuing the following complaint to the LORD: "My punishment is greater than I can bear!" Who made the statement?

Answer: Cain

Genesis 4:13 quotes Cain making the statement to the LORD after he killed his brother Abel. Cain made the statement after the LORD said because of the murder, he would be "cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand." Scripture goes on to quote the LORD telling Cain: "When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you.

A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth."
5. "What have you to do with peace? Turn around and follow me," is a quote that appears in 2 Kings 9:19. Who made the statement?

Answer: Jehu

Jehu made the statement. The ninth chapter of 2 Kings is about Jehu being anointed king of Israel by Elisha and the subsequent deaths of Joram and his mother Jezebel.

According to Scripture, when Joram saw Jehu and a company of men approaching, he sent a horseman to meet the contingent. When the horseman asked Jehu if he had come in peace, Jehu made replied: "What have you to do with peace? Turn around and follow me." The horseman ended up following Jehu.

When a second horseman was sent to meet Jehu, exactly the same thing happened.

The chapter goes on to tell of the deaths of Joram and Jezebel.
6. 1 Samuel 8:13-14 tells of a man making the following statement to the Israelites: "He will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks, and bakers. And he will take the best of your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, and give them to his servants." Who made the statement?

Answer: Samuel

Samuel is the correct answer. According to Scripture, he made the statement in a passionate appeal to the Israelites to avoid appointing a king over them. In other words, Samuel was saying a king would basically serve himself but not the people of Israel.

According to Scripture, Samuel made the statement after praying to the LORD.

1 Samuel 11-18, tells of his reasons for opposing the appointment of a king: "He will take your sons and appoint them for his own chariots and to be his horsemen, and some will run before his chariots. He will appoint captains over his thousands and captains over his fifties, will set some to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and some to make his weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. He will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks, and bakers. And he will take the best of your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, and give them to his servants. He will take a tenth of your grain and your vintage, and give it to his officers and servants. And he will take your male servants, your female servants, your finest young men, and your donkeys, and put them to his work. He will take a tenth of your sheep. And you will be his servants. And you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, and the Lord will not hear you in that day."

Verses 19-20 state Samuel's argument did not win any support: "Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, 'No, but we will have a king over us, that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.'"
7. "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel," is a quote made by one of God's prophets in the Hebrew Bible, or the Old Testament of the English Bible. Who made the statement?

Answer: Isaiah

The statement was made by Isaiah with the quote coming from Isaiah 7:14. According to Scripture, Isaiah made the comment while he was rebuking Ahaz, the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, the king of Judah. The quote is also featured in Matthew 1:23 in the New Testament.
8. Numbers 22:28 tells of the following statement being made: "What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?" Who made it?

Answer: Balaam's donkey

The statement was made by Balaam's donkey. According to Numbers 22:21-41, a donkey owned by Balaam started speaking to him when he was beating the helpless animal. Scripture states that after the donkey spoke, Balaam saw an angel of the Lord standing in the road with his sword drawn. Apparently the reason Balaam beat the donkey was the fact it saw the angel and refused to proceed. Balaam, at the time, did not see the angel and took his anger out on the helpless donkey.
9. Joshua 2:9 tells of the following statement being made to the Israelites: "I know that the Lord has given you the land, that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are fainthearted because of you." Who made the statement?

Answer: Rahab

Rahab, a prostitute in Jericho who hid two Israelite spies, is the correct answer.

Scripture states the king of Jericho received word Rahab was harboring Israelite spies. However, when the king sent emissaries to her house, they didn't find any evidence of the spies.

Joshua 2:4-6, tells of Rahab responding to the king's representatives: "'Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. And it happened as the gate was being shut, when it was dark, that the men went out. Where the men went I do not know; pursue them quickly, for you may overtake them.' (But she had brought them up to the roof and hidden them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order on the roof.)"

Verses 9-11 tell the reason for Rahab's willingness to help the Israelites: "'I know that the Lord has given you the land, that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are fainthearted because of you. For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were on the other side of the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed. And as soon as we heard these things, our hearts melted; neither did there remain any more courage in anyone because of you, for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath."
10. "If it pleases the king, let the king and Haman come today to the banquet that I have prepared for him," is a statement made by a young woman. What is the woman's name?

Answer: Esther

Esther made the statement in Esther 5:4 to the king who is known as Ahasuerus
in the KJV and the NKJV and as Xerxes in the NIV. The request by Esther was all part of a carefully orchestrated plan to thwart a scheme by the evil Haman to have all the Jews executed in the vast area ruled by the king. Esther would succeed and Haman would end up dying on the very hanging gallows he had constructed for Esther's cousin Mordecai.
