Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Scripture tells of Eve eating forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil with her husband Adam following suit. What went wrong?

Answer: Adam and Eve were ordered out of the Garden of Eden.

After Adam and Eve ate forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, they were removed from the Garden of Eden by God. Scripture states a serpent, usually regarded as Satan, convinced Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. Later, Adam followed Eve's advice and also ate the fruit. See Genesis 3:1-24 for details.
2. According to Scripture, Jacob and Laban came up with a plan in which he would be able to marry Rachel if he worked seven years for Laban. What went wrong?

Answer: After seven years were up, Jacob was still unable to marry Rachel.

True to his promise, Jacob worked seven years for Laban to win the hand of his daughter Rachel. However, when the seven years were up, Laban gave Jacob his oldest daughter Leah as a bride. This, even though, Jacob had no feelings for Leah and Rachel was the one he deeply loved. Laban, however, passed things off, saying it was not the custom of his people to give the younger daughter for marriage before the older one. Laban then convinced Jacob to work an additional seven years to win Rachel's hand. See Genesis 29:15-30 for details.
3. Scripture tells of Jonah going on a sailing ship to escape from God and avoid divine instructions to go to Nineveh to preach to the people. What went wrong?

Answer: Jonah was thrown overboard and swallowed by a gigantic fish.

Jonah serves as an example for Christians it is impossible to run away from God. Scripture tells of God requesting Jonah to go to Nineveh to preach to the people but going to the remote city was the last thing he wanted to do. So to flee from God, Jonah hopped on a sailing ship bound for Tarshish.

However, the ship Jonah was on became entangled in a major storm and when crew members came to the conclusion Jonah was responsible for causing the storm, they opted to toss him overboard. As if things were not bad enough, Jonah was then swallowed by a gigantic fish. According to Scripture, he miraculously survived in the stomach of the gigantic fish for three days before being regurgitated on to dry land.

It was then that Jonah became convinced be had to go to Nineveh to preach to the people. According to Scripture, his message was extremely well received with the inhabitants repenting of their ways.

Details can be found in the book of Jonah.
4. Scripture tells of King Saul giving permission to the young shepherd boy David to battle Goliath, with David miraculously killing the Philistine behemoth. From Saul's perspective, what went wrong?

Answer: David became a hero and Saul was filled with immense jealousy.

David, a young shepherd boy, had to win permission from King Saul for the right to battle Goliath, as no one thought he stood any chance against the Philistine behemoth. After David explained he had killed lions to save his sheep, Saul agreed it was worth giving him a chance to battle Goliath.

Scripture tells of Saul clothing David with his armor and putting a bronze helmet on his head. However, the armor was so heavy and so awkward, David could hardly move. So he opted to face Goliath without any armor.

Scripture goes on to tell of David killing Goliath and becoming a national hero in Israel. However, this is when things started to fall apart for Saul. As a result of David's national fame, Saul suffered from a severe case of jealousy which eventually took control of his life. In fact, things got so bad, Saul spent most of his waking hours attempting to kill David. And try as he may, Saul was always unsuccessful.

Later, Saul would commit suicide, after being wounded in battle, and David would eventually become king of Israel.

For details about David battling Goliath and the downfall of Saul, read 1 Samuel 17 through to 1 Samuel 31.
5. Scripture tells of David having an affair with Bathsheba, a married woman, while her husband Uriah, a soldier, was away fighting in a war. What went wrong?

Answer: Bathsheba became pregnant and David ended up killing Uriah.

A lot of things went wrong after David had his adulterous affair with Bathsheba, according to Scripture. Bathsheba became pregnant and David did all kinds of scheming in a futile attempt to cover up the fact he was the father of her child. When his plans fell through, David ended up orchestrating the murder of Bathsheba's husband Uriah.

Scripture goes on to tell of Nathan, a prophet of God, learning about David's evil actions and proclaiming the death of the infant boy Bathsheba would bear.

For details see 2 Samuel 11 and 2 Samuel 12.
6. Scripture tells of Zecharias refusing to believe word from the angel Gabriel he and his elderly wife, who had been unable to conceive, would given birth to a son. What went wrong?

Answer: Zecharias ended up being unable to speak until his son's birth.

Zecharias ended up being unable to speak until his son's birth when he stubbornly refused to believe an announcement of the angel Gabriel. Scripture states Zehcarias and his wife Elizabeth were both elderly and his wife had never been able to conceive. The boy she bore was John the Baptist.

The angel Gabriel also told Mary she would give birth to Jesus even though she had never been intimate with a man.

For details about Gabriel appearing before Zecharias and then Mary, see Luke 1.

In the NIV, Zecharias is known as Zechariah.
7. Scripture tells of Peter miraculously walking on water to meet Jesus. What went wrong?

Answer: Peter became distracted by the wind and waves and started to sink.

Scripture tells of Peter miraculously walking on water for an ever-so-brief period of time but things changed dramatically when he became distracted by the waves on the Sea of Galilee during a storm and started to sink. When Peter saw Jesus walking on the water, he couldn't resist the temptation and asked Christ to enable him to do likewise. An apparently ecstatic Peter then started doing the impossible -- walking on water. However, the "boisterous" wind distracted Peter and he began to sink. Jesus then reached out His hand and saved Peter from his demise. Peter was told by Jesus his lack of faith was responsible for his failure.

For details, see Matthew 14:27-33.
8. At the Last Supper, Jesus taught His disciples about the importance of being humble and serving others. To this end, Scripture tells of Christ washing the feet of the Twelve Disciples. What went wrong?

Answer: One disciple obviously wasn't listening and betrayed Jesus.

Judas Iscariot, of course, betrayed Jesus shortly after the feet washing incident. Scripture tells of Judas leading an army of men to Jesus where He had been praying in the Garden of Gethsemane. A sign to the mob was they would arrest the One Judas kissed. After kissing Jesus, He was arrested, humiliated tortured and crucified, but He arose triumphantly from the dead three days later.

For details about Jesus washing the feet of the Twelve Disciples as well as His betrayal, crucifixion and resurrection, read John 13 through to 21.
9. According to Scripture, Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver he received from the Pharisees. What went wrong?

Answer: Judas was filled with remorse and committed suicide.

After betraying Jesus for thirty pieces of silver, Scripture states Judas was filled with remorse and ended up killing himself. Scripture tells of Judas returning the thirty pieces of silver to the Pharisees who in turn used it to buy a Potter's Field to bury strangers. Purchase of the Potter's Field is seen as fulfilment of Old Testament prophecy, as per Jeremiah 32:6-9.

According to Matthew 27:5, Judas hanged himself.
10. Led by the Pharisees, the enemies of Jesus banded together and had Him crucified. From their perspective, what went wrong?

Answer: Jesus triumphantly rose from the dead three days later.

The enemies of Jesus thought things would improve immensely if Jesus was removed from the scene. After all, they were outraged by Christ's claims He was the Son of God and even had the audacity to heal people of their horrible and wretched health conditions on the Sabbath!

However, the four Gospels tell of their evil plan backfiring big time. After being arrested, humiliated, tortured and crucified, Christ would rise triumphantly from the dead and appear before a large number of people. (1 Corinthians 15:6, for example, states Christ appeared before "over five brethren at once" after His resurrection.)

As a result a new religion was born -- Christianity -- with the teachings of Jesus remaining extremely popular some two thousand years after the crucifixion.

From the perspective of Christ's enemies, something did indeed go wrong.
