quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. '"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about _________ "' (Luke 10:41, New International Version). What did the Lord say was worrying and upsetting Martha?

Answer: many things

'"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed -- or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."' (Luke 10:41,42 (NIV)).

Martha had complained to the Lord because her sister Mary was listening to his teaching rather than helping her prepare dinner.
2. '"Woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied. ...' (John 2:4, New International Version). With what issue did Jesus seem not to want to be involved?

Answer: A shortage of wine

'On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine."
"Woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied. "My hour has not yet come."' (John 4:1-4 (NIV)).

There are many theological opinions on what this exchange between Jesus and his mother can teach us but Mary's response may be the best lesson.

'"His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."' (John 4:5).
3. 'Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."' (John 4:10, New International Version). To whom did Jesus speak these words?

Answer: Both

'When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a drink?"' (John 4:7)

She was surprised he would ask her for a drink.

'The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)'
(John 4:9)

Jesus' answer that he would give her a gift of living water led into one of his longest discussions with a woman. This was unusual for it was not customary for men to speak to women in public much less a Jewish man to a Samaritan woman. She is also one of the few people to whom he revealed the fact that he was Israel's Messiah. The living water Jesus said he would give her as a gift is generally read as a symbolic term for the gift of the Holy Spirit that those who believed in him would receive after he returned to heaven.
4. '"Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven -- as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little."' (Luke 7:47, New International Version) What did this woman do that caused Jesus to comment on her great love?

Answer: She did all of these

'Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet."' (Luke 7:44-46)

Jesus was dining at the home of a Pharisee and he used the actions of this woman to teach him and his guest a lesson about the mercy and love of God.

'Then Jesus said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."' (Luke 7:48)
5. 'When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, "Don't cry."' (Luke 7:13, New International Version) Why was this woman crying?

Answer: Her son had just died

'As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out-the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her.' (Luke 7:12)

After Jesus had told her not to cry, '[t]hen he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, "Young man, I say to you, get up!" The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.' (Luke 7:14,15)

The miracles that Jesus performed often demonstrated to the people the love and care that God had for them.

'"They were all filled with awe and praised God. "A great prophet has appeared among us," they said. "God has come to help his people."' (Luke 7:16)
6. 'Jesus turned and saw her. "Take heart, daughter," he said, "your faith has healed you." And the woman was healed at that moment.' (Matthew 9:22, New International Version) What act of faith did this woman do that brought about her healing?

Answer: Touched the edge of Jesus' cloak

'Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. She said to herself, "If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed."'
(Matthew 9:21,22)

According to Jewish law, because of her bleeding this woman was considered 'unclean' and it would have been improper for a man to have any contact with her. Perhaps this is the reason she slipped in behind Jesus and only touched the hem of his garment. Her act of faith was enough to accomplish what no one else could for her and Jesus didn't let her faith in him go unnoticed.
7. '"[A]nd a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, "Woman, you are set free from your infirmity."' (Luke 13:11-12, New International Version) Where was Jesus when he set this woman free of her infirmity?

Answer: In a synagogue

'On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years.' (Luke 13:10)

'Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue leader said to the people, "There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath."' (Luke 13:14)

Jesus was often criticized for healing on the Sabbath because Jewish leaders claimed it violated the Sabbath law forbidding work, but Jesus saw through their hypocrisy and called them on it.

'"The Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Doesn't each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water? Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?"' (Luke 13:15-16)
8. 'Jesus turned and said to them, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children."' (Luke 23:28, New International Version) Why did Jesus tell these women to weep for themselves and their children?

Answer: He was warning them of terrible days to come

"For the time will come when you will say, 'Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!'" Then 'they will say to the mountains, "Fall on us!" and to the hills, "Cover us!"' For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?" (Luke 23:29-31)

These were prophetic words and are usually taken as referring to a time, later that century, when Jerusalem would be overrun and destroyed. In Luke 21:23 Jesus speaking to his disciples about the destruction of Jerusalem said, "How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people."
9. '"Leave her alone," said Jesus. "Why are you bothering her?..."' (Mark 14:6, New International Version) What was happening to this woman that caused Jesus to speak these words?

Answer: She was being criticized

'"Leave her alone," said Jesus. "Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her."' (Mark 14:6-9)

The woman was being criticized for pouring a very expensive jar of perfume over the head of Jesus rather than selling it and giving the money to the poor.
10. 'He (Jesus) asked her, "Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?"' (John 20:14, New International Version) Who was the woman looking for?

Answer: Jesus

'Thinking he (Jesus) was the gardener, she said, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him."
Jesus said to her, "Mary."
She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, "Rabboni!" (which means "Teacher").' (John 20:15-16)

The woman was Mary Magdalen and this encounter with Jesus was after he rose from the dead. Jesus had delivered her of seven demons. All four Gospels record her coming to the tomb and discovering he had risen from the dead.

The popular Christian hymn "The Garden" was based on this scripture.
