Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Job is one of the greatest overcomers chronicled in Scriptures. Despite his many woes he was finally restored by God and received much more than he had lost. Which virtue is he lauded for?

Answer: patience

James cites Job as a man who was patient in his sufferings. James 5:11. Even though Job found himself losing almost everything he humbled himself under God and reasoned that since we brought nothing into the world then it is certain that we will take nothing out.

Despite all his challenges Job submitted himself to God's will and was eventually rewarded. Patience is crucial in the process of overcoming.
2. David was just a youth when he overcame Goliath but do you know which of his older brothers scolded him for coming down to the battle?

Answer: Eliab

The story of David and Goliath can be found in I Samuel 17. David was sent by his father, Jesse, to take food for his brothers and find out how they were doing. When David saw the need for a man to stand up to Goliath he offered his services. It was David's faith in God (vs 43-47) that made him an overcomer. You can be an overcomer too. Faith in God is a key ingredient.
3. What two things did Jehoshapat do to overcome the Moabites and those others who came against him to battle?

Answer: set himself to seek the Lord and proclaimed a fast throughout Judah

When Jehoshaphat heard of the great multitude that were coming against him to battle he feared because he knew that Judah was no match for them. His only hope was in the living God. So Jehoshaphat set himself to seek the Lord and proclaimed a fast throughout Judah.

In his prayer, Jehoshaphat declared that they had no might against the great company that was coming against them, neither did they know what to do but their eyes were on the Lord. After that all Jehoshaphat had to do was to stand still and see the salvation of the Lord since God would fight the battle for them. (Read II Chronicles 20) Secret of overcoming? Set yourself to seek the Lord then fast and pray. You can be an overcomer too.
4. I was thrown in a den of hungry lions but I overcame. Oh yes! I am indeed Daniel. Who was the unhappy king who wanted to see my deliverance?

Answer: Darius

Darius the Mede signed a decree forbidding any person to petition any God or man except himself for thirty days. When Daniel heard of the decree that had been signed and the punishment that would be meted out to those who disobeyed he continued his prayer life faithfully. Darius realized that he had been tricked into making the decree but he could do nothing to prevent Daniel from being thrown into the den of lions since the law of the Medes and Persians could not be altered.

In verse 16 of Daniel 6 it is recorded that Darius expected the God who Daniel served continually to deliver him. Daniel overcame and was taken out of the lions' den. Faithfulness to God is another secret ingredient for overcoming. (Read Daniel 6)
5. Three men who would not bow were thrown into a fiery furnace but overcame without even a singe. From the names listed find one of the three.

Answer: Hananiah

When the children of Judah went into the Babylonian courts they were given names by the prince of the eunuchs. Hananiah's name was changed to Shadrach, Mishael's to Meshach, Azariah's to Abednego. Daniel's name was changed to Belteshazzar. (Dan.1:6-7) The experiences of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego are recounted in Daniel 3.

It is believed by many theologians that Daniel must have been away on official business for the king when this incident took place, hence his non-involvement. Refusing to bow is important for those who wish to become overcomers. Refuse to give in to the whims of others and stand firmly on the side of principle.
6. Jericho and all its inhabitants was about to be destroyed but one woman and all her household were going to be overcomers. What did the woman do to merit this?

Answer: She showed kindness to the spies.

Just before Jericho was taken Joshua sent spies to search out the country. These spies lodged at the house of Rahab, the harlot. The king of Jericho sent to Rahab for the men but she hid them and helped them in their escape. The kindness that she showed to these men was returned and she was saved along with all who were in her house.(Joshua 2 & 6:22, 23) Showing kindness to others can be very profitable for those who strive to overcome.
7. Two apostles became overcomers when they prayed and sang praises unto God at midnight while their feet were in stocks in prison. Who were they?

Answer: Paul and Silas

Paul and Silas were accused of exceedingly troubling the city after Paul cast demons out of a certain damsel who brought much gain to her masters. It would seem that things were not going well for them as they were beaten and cast into prison and their feet were made fast in the stocks. Nevertheless at midnight as the apostles prayed and sang praises to God a great earthquake shook the foundations of the prison. All the doors opened and the bonds of the prisoners were loosed.

The jailer woke up and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. After Paul stopped him from hurting himself he attended to their stripes and was baptised.

The magistrates then begged them to leave the city. Yes! By praying and singing praises overcoming is assured.
8. Some may say that I did not overcome because I was stoned to death. However, I had the privilege of seeing heaven open. Who am I?

Answer: Stephen

Acts 6:8 describes Stephen as full of faith and power. As a result he did great wonders and miracles among the people. Stephen was accused of speaking blasphemies and was cast out of the city and stoned to death. Before dying Stephen, who was full of the Spirit, was able to see heaven open and Jesus standing on the right hand of God.

As he died he committed his spirit to God and asked for forgiveness for those who stoned him. (Acts 7:59-60) Being full of the Holy Spirit, faith and power is vital to overcoming.
9. When I became an overcomer I was given an important task to feed my Master's sheep. Who am I?

Answer: Peter

On the third occasion when Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after His resurrection He asked Peter the question 'Do you love me?' three times. Peter was grieved when Jesus asked Him the third time so he reminded Jesus that since He knew all things He knew that he loved Him.

He was given the mandate to feed the sheep. Peter was no longer self confident. His faith was now in his Saviour rather than in himself. He was ready for the task Jesus wanted him to perform. (John 21:14-10) When we become God confident instead of self confident we are on the path to becoming overcomers.
10. This overcomer humbled himself as a servant and became obedient unto death but then he triumphed over death and the grave. Who was this man?

Answer: Jesus

According to Philippians 2:5-10 Jesus became a man and humbled Himself to death on the cross. For this reason God exalted Him and gave Him a name above all other names. As a result of Jesus' death on the cross Paul was able to declare in I Cor. 15:54-55, "Death is swallowed up in victory...oh death where is thy sting, oh grave where is thy victory?"
Humble service to our fellowmen will undoubtedly aid us in our quest to become overcomers.
