Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these substances has the highest melting point?

Answer: Stainless Steel

The melting point of wax is 57 degrees Celsius (135 degrees Fahrenheit). The melting point of sodium chloride (salt) is 801 degrees Celsius (1474 degrees Fahrenheit). The melting point of gold is 1064 degrees Celsius (1947 degrees Fahrenheit) and the melting point of stainless steel is 1527 degrees Celsius (2781 degrees Fahrenheit).
2. Which was the first element to be produced artificially?

Answer: Technetium

Both einsteinium and fermium were made by A. Ghiorso in 1952 in U.S.A. Unnilseptium was made by G. Munzenburg in 1976 in Germany. Technetium was made in 1937 by C. Perrier and E. Segre.
3. An object is immersed in water and its upthrust is greater than its weight. Will the object float or sink?

Answer: float

If the upthrust of an object displaced in water is greater than or equal to its own weight, then the object should float. If it is less than its own weight, then the object sinks. Upthrust is the upward force exerted by fluids on displaced objects.
4. What do you call a place with a large group of wind turbines which generate electricity?

Answer: wind farm

A wind farm is about 40% efficient. Efficiency tells us how good a machine converts energy.
5. What is electric charge measured in?

Answer: Coulombs

Electric current is measured in amps. Resistance is measured in ohms. Radioactivity is measured in becquerels. A current of 1 ampere(amp) carries a charge of 1 coulomb per second.
6. A system which enables us to interact with a computer-generated world by a headset and a data glove is called which of these?

Answer: Virtual Reality

In virtual reality, the headset lets us see the 3-dimensional images while the data glove lets us touch what we see. A computer-aided design (CAD) constructs an object on the screen using computer graphics when information is fed into a special computer. This construction helps architects and engineers to try newer ways to construct buildings.
7. What do you call materials that are conductors when warm and insulators when cold?

Answer: semiconductors

Superconductors are metals which are conductors at temperatures close to absolute zero. Some ceramics are also superconductors.
8. What does a telephone use to change the sound waves from a person's voice into electrical signals?

Answer: microphone

The electrical signals are then sent by a cable to the receiving telephone and changed into sound.
9. Which of these can power a calculator at no cost to the user?

Answer: solar

Solar cells transform the energy of sunlight into electricity. A solar cell is found mostly on the top of a calculator.
10. Which energy does the spring of an unopened jack-in-the box have?

Answer: potential

When the box is opened and the jack jumps out, the energy becomes kinetic energy. A raised object has gravitational potential energy. If I am holding an apple in my hand, the apple has gravitational potential energy. If it accidentally falls on to the floor, the energy becomes kinetic energy. When we digest food, the chemical compounds (for eg. carbohydrates, oils, fats, proteins) in the food are digested and energy is released for our bodies to use. This is called chemical energy.
