Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the surface area of a cube measuring 4 cm on an edge?

Answer: 96 cm squared

A cube has 6 faces which are all squares. The formula for finding the area of a square is L^2 (or length of a side, squared). Therefore the formula for finding the area of six such squares (a cube) is 6L^2.
So: 6*4*4 = 96 cm squared.
2. If the radius of a circle is 2.55 centimetres, what is the diameter of the circle in kilometres?

Answer: 0.000051 km

The diameter of a circle is twice its radius. 2.55 cm * 2 = 5.1 cm.
Now, to convert 5.1 cm into km, we first convert 5.1 cm to 0.051 m (1 m = 100 cm, therefore 1 cm is equal to 1/100 of a metre or 0.01 metres) and then convert 0.051 m to 0.000051 km (1 km = 1000 metres, therefore 1 metre is equal to 1/1000 of a kilometre or 0.001 kilometres).
3. A rectangle is x - 1 centimetres wide and x + 4 centimetres long. If the perimeter of the rectangle is 34 cm, what is its area?

Answer: 66

The formula for finding the perimeter of a rectangle is 2l + 2b where l stands for length and b for breadth (width):
Perimeter = 2l + 2b
34 = 2(x+4) + 2(x-1)
34 = 2x + 8 + 2x - 2
34 = 4x + 6
4x = 28
x = 28/4 = 7 cm.
Now we know that the width is (7 - 1) cm, or 6 cm wide and the length is (7 + 4) cm, or 11 cm long. Therefore:
Area = length * breadth
A = 11 * 6
A = 66 cm^2
4. In which quadrilateral are all of these true: a) 'only' the opposite sides are required to be the same length; b) the opposite sides are parallel; c) the opposite angles are equal?

Answer: parallelogram

A trapezium (a trapezoid in American usage) has just one pair of its opposite sides parallel. In a rhombus, 'all' four sides are the same length (a rhombus is an 'equilateral' parallelogram), both pairs of opposite sides are parallel and the opposite angles are equal.

In a kite, two pairs of adjacent sides are equal and the diagonals of a kite meet at right angles, bisecting one of them. A parallelogram has no lines of symmetry.
5. What do you call a six-sided closed figure with all its sides and angles equal?

Answer: regular hexagon

A regular hexagon has six equal sides, six interior angles which are equal and measure 120 degrees each (telling us that the sum of a hexagon's interior angles is always 720 degrees), and six lines of symmetry. Go to this web page if you want to see a chart which illustrates and names eight regular polygons: http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/refpages/RefMedia.aspx?refid=461527051
6. Through how many degrees does the hour hand move in 37 minutes?

Answer: 18.5 degrees

Remember this: When the hour hand moves from 3 to 4, it moves through an angle of 30 degrees (one-twelfth of the total 360 degrees in a full revolution). In other words, in 1 hour or 60 minutes, the hour hand moves through an angle of 30 degrees. Therefore in one minute, the hour hand moves through an angle of 30/60 or 0.5 degrees.

Therefore in 37 minutes, the hour hand moves through 0.5 * 37 degrees, or 18.5 degrees.
7. Is 695643565632 a perfect square?

Answer: No

The squares of the numbers 1 to 10 in order are: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100. You will notice that none of these numbers ends in 2, 3, 7 or 8. Therefore, the square of a number, however many digits it has, cannot end in 2, 3, 7 or 8.
8. Find the cost of 90 score yo-yos at 12.5 cents each. (Hint: 1 dollar = 100 cents, the word "score" refers to a number)

Answer: $225

The meaning of 90 score yo-yos is 90 * 20 = 1800 yo-yos. The word 'score' represents the number 20. If one yo-yo costs 12.5 cents, then 1800 yo-yos will cost 12.5 * 1200 = 22500 cents = $225.
9. A car travels 35 kilometres in 30 minutes. What is its speed in kilometres per hour?

Answer: 70

A car travels 35 kilometres in 30 minutes. As 30 minutes is equal to 1/2 hour, we can say that the time taken is equal to 1/2 hour. Then using the formula:
average speed = distance travelled / time taken
average speed = 35 km / 1/2 hour
average speed = 35 km * 2 half-hours per hour
average speed = 70 km/h.
10. What is the probability of choosing a prime number from the numbers 90 to 100 inclusive?

Answer: 1/11

There are 11 (not 10) numbers from 90 to 100: 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 100. And the only prime number is 97, so the probability of choosing a prime number from the numbers 90 to 100 is 1/11.
