Question 1 of 10
1. This problem is solved by substitution:

Bradley has six more fish than Michelle. Together they have 22 fish. How many does Brad have?

Answer: (One number)
Question 2 of 10
2. Now, let's try elimination:

I work at a pizza shop (well not really, but). Small pizzas sell for $4 and large pizzas sell for $7. In one shift I sold 25 pizzas. Together they sold for $148. How many large pizzas did I sell?

Answer: (One number)
Question 3 of 10
3. Formula time! y=(x2-x1)²+(y2-y1)² (square root of it all)

I'm standing at (0,0) on a graph. There is one restaurant at A(7,2) and one at B(-4,3). I'm really hungry. I should go to A because it is closer.

Question 4 of 10
4. Factor:

x²+11x+28
Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. What is the vertex of a parabola with the equation y=(x-1)² -4 ? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Note: This question takes a while.

The path of a baseball is the equation y=-x²+5x+84 where x is the horizontal distance from a fence, in meters and y is the height above the ground, in meters. Rounded, what is the highest point the ball reaches?
Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Two consecutive even numbers multiplied together equal 624. Is one of the numbers 24?

Question 8 of 10
8. The last three are trigonometry questions:

An ant is 20 feet away from a building. He has to look up at an angle of 66° to see the top of the building. How tall is the building?

Answer: (One number, no units)
Question 9 of 10
9. Jesse is in a bike race. He rides 12 km from Newcastle to Riverside. He makes a 74° turn and bikes 17 km to Trenton. He then makes a 63° back to Newcastle. Rounded, how many kilometres did he ride for?

Answer: (One number)
Question 10 of 10
10. A tree was 8 feet tall until it was struck by lightning and broke in half, forming a right triangle. 2 feet still stand where the tree used to be and the rest lie diagonally down towards the ground. Rounded to the nearest degree, what angle does the tree make with the ground?

Answer: (One number)

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This problem is solved by substitution: Bradley has six more fish than Michelle. Together they have 22 fish. How many does Brad have?

Answer: 14

B=Brad
M=Michelle

M+6=B or M=B-6
M+B=22 or M=22-B -- substitute into first equation

22-B=B-6
28=2B
14=B

then for Michelle's amount, you can insert the fourteen in one of the equations,

M+B=22
M+14=22
M=8

Alternatively, you could halve 22, making eleven and add three to arrive at the correct answer.
2. Now, let's try elimination: I work at a pizza shop (well not really, but). Small pizzas sell for $4 and large pizzas sell for $7. In one shift I sold 25 pizzas. Together they sold for $148. How many large pizzas did I sell?

Answer: 16

l=Large
s=Small

s+l=25 -- Multiply by 4
4s+7l=148-- Multiply by -1

+4s+4l=100
-4s-7l=-148 now subtract

-3l=-48
l=16

Then, to find the number of smalls, insert 16 in one of the equations:

16+s=25
s=9
3. Formula time! y=(x2-x1)²+(y2-y1)² (square root of it all) I'm standing at (0,0) on a graph. There is one restaurant at A(7,2) and one at B(-4,3). I'm really hungry. I should go to A because it is closer.

Answer: No

Let's look at A (7,2) and X (0,0) (d=distance)

d=(0-7)² +(0-2) ²
d=-7 ² + -2 ²
d= 49 +4
d=53 - square root
d = 7.3

now B (-4,3) and X (0,0)

d=(0--4)2 + (0-3)2
d=(4 2 + -3 2
d= 16 + 9
d= 25 square root
d= 5

So, B is closer.
4. Factor: x²+11x+28

Answer: (x+4) (x+7)

You need two numbers that add to the middle term and multiply to the final term, so add to 11 and multiply to 28. 1 and 28, 2 and 14, 4 and 7 are the numbers that multiply to 28, but 4 and 7 are the only ones that equal 28.
5. What is the vertex of a parabola with the equation y=(x-1)² -4 ?

Answer: (1,-4)

When given a formula in this form y=a(x-h)² +k the vertex is always (h,k), so it would be h(1) and k(-4).
6. Note: This question takes a while. The path of a baseball is the equation y=-x²+5x+84 where x is the horizontal distance from a fence, in meters and y is the height above the ground, in meters. Rounded, what is the highest point the ball reaches?

Answer: 90 meters

First, let's factor to find the two x-intercepts:
y=-x²+5x+84 -- Factor out the negative
y=-(x²-5x-84) -- Adds to -5, multiply to -84
y=-(x+7)(x-12)- so the x intercepts are -7 and +12

Now, calculate an axis of symmetry: AOS

x+y/2
-7+12/2
5/2
AOS=2.5

So, at its maximum height, the ball is 2.5 m away from the fence(x), so sub the 2.5 back into the original equation to find y, the height.

y=-(2.5)² + 5(2.5)+84
y= -6.25 + 12.5 + 84
y= 90.25 m

So, the ball's maximum height was 90.25 or rounded 90 m.
7. Two consecutive even numbers multiplied together equal 624. Is one of the numbers 24?

Answer: Yes

Let's find out. Even numbers are separated by 2, so one number is x and the other is x+2.

x(x+2) = 624
x²+2x=624
x2+2x-624=0 -- add to 2, multiply to 624
(x+24)(x+26)

So, the numbers are 24 and 26.
8. The last three are trigonometry questions: An ant is 20 feet away from a building. He has to look up at an angle of 66° to see the top of the building. How tall is the building?

Answer: 45

To solve this, you would need the tangent ratio.

tan=opposite/adjacent
tan66=x/20
20tan66=x
44.9 =x

The building is 45 feet tall.
9. Jesse is in a bike race. He rides 12 km from Newcastle to Riverside. He makes a 74° turn and bikes 17 km to Trenton. He then makes a 63° back to Newcastle. Rounded, how many kilometres did he ride for?

Answer: 42

This requires the sine law:

N=Newcastle
R=Riverside r= distance between Newcastle & Trenton
T=Trenton t= distance between Newcastle & Riverside

r/sinR = t/sinT
r/sin74= 12/sin63
r=12sin74/sin63
r=12.9 km
12.9+12+17=41.9

He rode for 41.9 km.
10. A tree was 8 feet tall until it was struck by lightning and broke in half, forming a right triangle. 2 feet still stand where the tree used to be and the rest lie diagonally down towards the ground. Rounded to the nearest degree, what angle does the tree make with the ground?

Answer: 19

6 meters would have fallen off the tree to make the hypoteneuse. The sine ratio is now needed

Sine ratio: sin=opposite/hypoteneuse so sin= 2/6

sin=0.33333...
0=0.3333... sin-1
0=19.5°

It make a 19.5° angle.

Depending on how many threes you calculate, your answer might come out to less than 19.5, so 19 was also a possible answer.
