Question 1 of 10
1. Each day, in the little known principality of Fintruvia, the Duc L'Uckyk presents a special award to one randomly chosen citizen. The population is 150,000 and 15% of these hold the award. Assuming zero rates for births, deaths, emigration and immigration, for how many years (approximately) has the award been presented? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Martin the gecko is the official national lizard of Fintruvia. He measures 15cm from the tip of his snout to the tip of his tail. If the tail constitutes 15% of his total length, how long is the rest of his body? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. Inspired by the movie "The King's Speech", the Duc L'Uckyk decides to address his citizens. His reading skills, however, are not all they might be. In a 15 minute speech, he makes 20 errors. If the speech had been 30 minutes long, he would have been 15% more likely to make mistakes. How many errors, statistically, should be expected from this longer version? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. You wish to import a car from America to Fintruvia. The car has a list price of 15,000 dollars and you negotiate a 15% discount. Import duty is added and this is calculated at 15% of the list price. You are paying a 15% cash deposit and taking out a loan to cover the balance. If the exchange rate is 15 fintruvian troubles to the dollar, how much will you have to borrow? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. The Statistician range of mountains contains the four highest peaks to be found in Fintruvia. Mount A is 15% taller than Mount B. Mount C is 15% shorter than Mount A. Mount D is 15% taller than Mount C. Which is Fintruvia's highest point? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Conservationists persuade you to spend 15 minutes filling in a donation form to help save the endangered Fintruvian googler. You pledge to give $15 in your first year of giving and increase this by 15% in each subsequent year. How much (rounding to the nearest cent) will you give in the fifteenth year? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. The time has come for the Duc L'Uckyk to marry off his eldest son. There is a 3 in 4 chance that the couple will enjoy a happy marriage and a 1 in 5 chance that they will be married for more than 50 years. What is the probability that they will celebrate their golden wedding and have a happy marriage (assuming both are independent events)? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. At the wedding of the Duc L'Uckyk's son, 15 buglers play a specially commissioned piece that lasts for 15 minutes. The buglers are positioned at 15 second intervals along the royal party's parade route; each begins playing as the royal coach passes them; and each plays the full 15 minutes of the piece. How long is the total performance, from when the first bugler begins to the moment that the last bugler finishes? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Soccer is the national sport of Fintruvia but, unfortunately, the national side lost their last game 15-0. It might have been more but for the heroics of a 15-year old goalkeeper who made 15 saves. The crowd was so disillusioned that, after every 15 minutes of play, 15% of those remaining left. If the crowd initially numbered 160,000, how many saw the fifteenth save in the 74th minute? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Rebellion is afoot in the principality of Fintruvia. The Duc L'Uckyk's evil brother, Count Me'Athead, seizes the throne whilst the Duc is on official business. Keen to avoid bloodshed, he offers the Duc an intriguing choice to determine who shall rule. The first option is a coin toss with 50:50 outcome. The alternative is that the Duc may save his throne if he can return to the palace within 15 minutes. He will not succeed if he can't get his car started (15% probability); it breaks down en route (15% probability); he gets caught in traffic (15% probability) or is apprehended by rebels (15% probability). Assuming that there are no other factors that will affect the outcome, which option, statistically, should the Duc choose? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: 62

The population is 150,000 and of these 15% or 22,500 hold the award. Dividing by 365 gives 61.64 years. We could, of course, have factored in leap years but this would have made no difference to the approximate result.
2. Martin the gecko is the official national lizard of Fintruvia. He measures 15cm from the tip of his snout to the tip of his tail. If the tail constitutes 15% of his total length, how long is the rest of his body?

Answer: 12.75cm

Total length is 15cm. The tail constitutes 15% of this length = 2.25cm. Therefore, the remainder of the body is 12.75cm.

Answer: 46

If the Duc makes 20 errors in a 15 minute speech then, without adding in any additional factors, he would be expected to make 40 errors in a speech twice as long. But ... he is 15% more likely to make mistakes over the longer period. This should produce an additional 6 mistakes (40 x 15%) giving a statistically anticipated total of 46.

Answer: 191,250 ft

The discount takes 15% from the list price and the import duty effectively adds this back so the amount required is still the original $15,000. The deposit is therefore $2,250 (15,000 x 15%) leaving a loan balance of $12,750. Converting this to fintruvian troubles involves multiplying by 15 and gives the total of 191,250 ft.
5. The Statistician range of mountains contains the four highest peaks to be found in Fintruvia. Mount A is 15% taller than Mount B. Mount C is 15% shorter than Mount A. Mount D is 15% taller than Mount C. Which is Fintruvia's highest point?

Answer: Mount A

It can be clearly determined from the question that Mount A is taller than Mounts B and C. The uncertainty, therefore, is whether it is taller than Mount D. The difference (X) between Mount C and Mount A is 15% of Mount A's height. The difference (Y) between Mount C and Mount D is 15% of Mount C's height. As Mount A is higher than Mount C then X must be greater than Y and Mount A must be higher than Mount D.

This can also be demonstrated by taking B to be 10,000m and working out the relative proportions. This makes Mount A 11,500m. Mount C is 15% shorter than Mount A - 9,775m. Finally, Mount D is 15% taller than Mount C - 11,241.25m.
6. Conservationists persuade you to spend 15 minutes filling in a donation form to help save the endangered Fintruvian googler. You pledge to give $15 in your first year of giving and increase this by 15% in each subsequent year. How much (rounding to the nearest cent) will you give in the fifteenth year?

Answer: $106.14

In the second year you will pay $15 x 1.15. In the third year you will pay $15 x 1.15². In the nth year you will pay $15 x 1.15 to the power of n-1 which means that your Year 15 payment will be $15 x 1.15 to the power of 14 = $106.135586467335.

Answer: 15%

Given the title of this quiz it probably had to be 15%, didn't it? The probability of a combined event comes from multiplying the two individual probabilities together. Thus, their chances of living long, married and in harmony are 3/4 (75%) x 1/5 (20%) = 3/20 (15%).

Answer: 18 minutes 30 seconds

The first bugler finishes in 15 minutes. Each of the 14 subsequent buglers extends the time by 15 seconds. Thus, the total time is 15 minutes + 14 x 15 seconds = 15 minutes + 210 seconds = 18 minutes 30 seconds.

Answer: 83,521

160,000 x 15% left after 15 minutes = 24,000 fans, leaving 136,000.
136,000 x 15% left after 30 minutes = 20,400 fans, leaving 115,600.
115,600 x 15% left after 45 minutes = 17,340 fans, leaving 98,260.
98,260 x 15% left after 60 minutes = 14,739 fans, leaving 83,521 to view that 74th minute save.

Answer: The car journey

With the coin toss the Duc has a 50% chance of success.

If the Duc gambles on making it back to the palace, each of the factors would reduce his chance of success to 85% but, as they all apply to his journey, they need to be multiplied together to calculate his probability of arriving in time. Thus, 0.85 x 0.85 x 0.85 x 0.85 = 0.52200625 or a 52.2% chance of success. He should, therefore, be advised to take the car journey.
