Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is *not* a safety device on an elevator?

Answer: Call button

A call button is not a safety device, it just "calls" the elevator to a given floor. It is not the same thing as the telephone box that can be found inside some elevators.
2. If an elevator is said to be roped 1:1, how many sheaves are placed on top of the car?

Answer: 0

1:1 roping involves hitching directly to the car and counterweight.
3. In an elevator, what does COP stand for?

Answer: Car Operating Panel

It's the panel inside the cabin, housing call buttons, key switches and flex terminations.
4. Holding in a call button will make the elevator arrive at its destination faster.

Answer: False

I can only say that it surprises me how many people think it is true.
5. Which of these is NOT likely to be found on a standard, non-roped hydraulic elevator?

Answer: Overspeed Governor

Most hydraulic elevators use a pipe rupture valve in the hydraulic circuit, before the oil enters the ram. If the hydraulic is roped, then an overspeed governor is used.
6. What is the mechanism called that detects if the elevator is going too fast?

Answer: Overspeed governor

It is nice to know if the elevator is overspeeding, without the hassle of having to disengage it from the safety gear...
7. Which of the following elevator drives is not suitable for a high rise building of say, 50 floors?

Answer: 2 speed AC

2 speed ACs, typically, are only suitable for speeds up to 1.75ms. Most high rise elevators are required to do speeds of up to 10ms!
8. What is the purpose of the counterweight?

Answer: To balance the load of the car across the sheave

A cwt is balanced to 40-50 percent of the rated load of the car. The work done by the motor is reduced, thereby saving energy.
9. What is the purpose of compensating chains or ropes?

Answer: To compensate for the difference in weight of the car, counter weights and cables

Compo chains or ropes keep the load on the main drive sheave constant.
10. Some elevators were once powered by water pressure.

Answer: True

The last water hydros were decommissioned in the 1970s.
11. All elevator machine rooms are located on the roofs of buildings.

Answer: False

Machine rooms can be located under, beside, or even in the shaft, depending on the roping arrangements.
12. In which of these cases are landing buttons ignored by an elevator?

Answer: All of these

Landing calls are only answered when the elevator is on automatic mode and is connected to the group function.
13. What principle do roped elevators work on?

Answer: Traction

Traction is the term required. Ropes would gain traction on a sheave of ice, albeit very little.
14. What type of elevator would you expect to have a valve block?

Answer: Hydraulic elevator

15. Elevators are the safest form of transport.

Answer: True

Elevators are even safer than walking! Statistics show that a person has more chance of being killed walking down the street than in an elevator.
