Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What property do all metals share?

Answer: They conduct electricity.

All metals conduct electricity. It is just that some are good conductors, while some are poor ones. Not all metals are hard, some are in the alkaline metal group and are soft. Most metals form basic oxides, some form amphoteric oxides. Not all metals react with water.
2. In a bulb, a noble gas argon is used. Why is argon used instead of air in the light bulb?

Answer: The filament lasts for a long time.

Argon is used widely in light bulbs. It is very unreactive, hence it is used in filaments. With argon in the filament, the filament lasts longer, however, it does not glow more brightly. Neon is another noble gas used to make colorful signs.
3. Compound X is unknown. Compound X does not dissolve in water, does not react with water and is used to control soil acidity. What is compound X?

Answer: calcium carbonate

Calcium hydroxide, calcium oxide and calcium chloride all dissolve in water. Calcium carbonate, or limestone, does not dissolve in water. Also, calcium carbonate barely reacts or does not react with water. One of calcium carbonate's uses is to control soil acidity.
4. Out of these four processes, which one is endothermic (absorbs or takes in heat)?

Answer: Heating water to make steam

For "Burning magnesium to make the oxide", the word burn obviously tell us that heat is given, so heat is produced, hence the reaction is exothermic. Anhydrous means "without water". When a substance changes from solid to liquid or liquid to gas, the process is "endothermic" (consumes energy).

However, when a substance changes from gas to liquid or liquid to solid, then the reaction is "exothermic". Heating water to make steam changes its form from a liquid to gas, and hence is an endothermic process.
5. When burning petrol in motor vehicles, two gases form which contribute to acid rain. What are the two gases?

Answer: Nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide

Carbon monoxide is produced mainly from burning fossil fuels. Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide gases are mainly produced from exhausts and burning petrol from cars. Sulphur dioxide is acidic and contributes largely to the formation of acid rain, nitrogen dioxide is the other big contributor to acid rain.
6. Please choose what gas all of these four cases produce. The four cases are acid rain on a limestone statue, a candle burning, a dog panting and fermenting grapes to make wine.

Answer: Carbon dioxide

Acid rain on a limestone statue is the most obvious clue. Limestone's formula is calcium carbonate and when it is broken down; the gas produced is carbon dioxide. Also, when fermenting grapes, carbon dioxide is produced in the main fermentation process. When a candle burns, carbon dioxide is also produced. When a dog pants, the dog exhales carbon dioxide.
7. What product is manufactured by electrolysis in factories?

Answer: Aluminum

Sodium chloride is made by electrolysis, but is not used in the "manufacture" process. Aluminum is produced by "electrolysis" in Hall's cell. Electrolysis is a good and efficient way to make aluminum.
8. Which of these is liquid at room temperature?

Answer: Bromine

Bromine is a red-brownish liquid at room temperature. Chlorine is a gas at room temperature. Iodine is a solid at room temperature. Oxygen is obviously a gas at room temperature, hence bromine is the correct choice.
9. The last two questions will be concerned with organic chemistry. Which organic compound contains three elements?

Answer: Ethanol

Ethane and ethene are hydrocarbons with ethane being saturated and ethene being unsaturated. Poly(ethene) doesn't have a formula as it is just a long chain. Ethanol's formula is C2H5OH.
10. When acid and alkaline mixes, salt and water forms. When alcohol and an organic acid mixes, what organic material forms?

Answer: Ester

For example, when ethanol and ethanoic acid combines, an ester called ethyl ethanoate and water forms. So, ethyl ethanoate is an ester. This is the end! Thanks for playing the quiz!
