Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Actor Jane Seymour and guitarist Tim McIlrath share an unusual facial feature. What is it?

Answer: Their irises are two different colours.

Eye colour is determined by the amount of melanin in a person's eye. Heterochromia iridis is a condition that affects the colour of a person's iris. It means that the right eye will be lighter or darker than the left eye. For example, Rise Against musician Tim McIlrath has a blue left eye and a brown right eye.

2. Grafted instead of genetically modified, the plant named "Ketchup 'n' Fries" contains which two foods grown on the same plant?

Answer: tomatoes and potatoes

The name "Ketchup 'n' Fries" is an allusion to the tomatoes and potatoes that the plant grows. On the vine, sweet cherry tomatoes are grown and found in the ground are the white potatoes. Grafting (the process of physically combining the two halves of different seed types to make one plant) is only possible here because tomatoes and potatoes actually belong to the same nightshade family.

3. If you have ever had chicken pox, you may get which affliction later in life?

Answer: Shingles

If you've had the pox, the herpes zoster virus remains in your system and makes you susceptible to shingles, which is a very painful rash, appearing mostly around the upper body, sometimes on the forehead, but possible anywhere else. This usually occurs as your body ages, and your immune system is weaker.

It can be difficult to get rid of. There is a form of immunization available.

5. The Hayflick Limit, discovered by Leonard Hayflick while working with embryonic cell cultures, relates to what process?

Answer: Aging

When Leonard Hayflick was growing embryonic cell cultures for vaccine studies in 1961, the scientific community believed that a cell culture, if properly cared for, could live forever. This was because Alexis Carrel had created an "immortal" cell line which had lived for 34 years. Hayflick's work showed that cells have a limited number (between 40 and 60) of times which they will divide before they stop dividing and eventually die.

It was later discovered that the telomeres in cells get slightly smaller with each division and this is what leads to the eventual end of the process.

6. What is the name of the acid that builds up in the body during periods of strenuous exercise?

Answer: Lactic

As you exercise, the body demands energy and so glucose is broken down. This oxidizes to pyruvate (pyruvic acid) and it also produces lactates. The tissues endeavour to remove the lactates but the high demand sees them struggle to keep up, hence the build up.

7. Sperm and egg cells fuse during fertilization to form a zygote. What name is given to the sperm and egg cells?

Answer: Gametes

Although the female egg cell is the largest cell in the body it is relatively small in comparison to the egg cells of animals. For example the egg cell of a goldfish is far larger than that of a human. This is because the human egg cell contains a smaller food store, as the embryo is fed by the placenta soon after becoming embedded in the womb wall.

10. Bacteria in soil are vital to the nitrogen cycle. Which type of bacteria converts ammonium into nitrates?

Answer: Nitrifying bacteria

The nitrogen found in nitrates can now be taken up by plants via the roots and is used to make proteins.
Saprophytic bacteria are bacteria which secret enzymes onto food. This is known as extracellular digestion.
Denitrifying bacteria convert nitrates into nitrogen gas.
Deaminating bacteria removes ammonia from amino acids formed from the breakdown of dead plant and animal proteins.
