2. There are four main blood types, but the ISBT now recognises thirty blood group systems. Do people keep the same blood type all their lives?

Answer: Usually but not necessarily

The ISBT is the International Society of Blood Transfusion, and of those thirty types now officially recognised, these break down to more than six hundred blood-group antigens, most of which, however, are very rare. In extremely rare cases, such as a liver transplant or a bone marrow transplant, the blood group that a person is born with can actually convert into the blood group contained within the transplanted liver or bone marrow.

3. Who's regarded as the "father of medical genetics"?

Answer: Victor McKusick

Victor McKusick was notable for his pioneering research on hereditary-related diseases among the Amish people of Pennsylvania. He was best remembered for authoring the catalog called "Mendelian Inheritance in Man" that was published in 1966. It has a continuously updated online version called "Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man" which provides students of medicine and clinical practitioners a timely research resource on human genes and genetic disorders.

4. Bubonic plague is one of three types of plague and is mainly spread how?

Answer: Fleas from animals

Bubonic plague is spread mainly from fleas carried on small animals. It can also be spread from the bodily fluids of infected animals. Bacteria enter the host from a flea bite and travel to the lymph nodes, causing them to swell. Mammals, including humans, are at risk for bubonic plague. Symptoms include fever, vomiting and swollen lymph nodes.

The bubonic plague was the cause of the Black Death in the fourteenth century. One way to prevent it is sanitary handling of dead animal carcasses.

Answer: Trojan horse

The Trojan horse, in computer virus terms, is used to gain access to your computer illegally, often by pretending to be a file which you would want to download. It is named for the way the Greeks are supposed to have gained access to the city of Troy by hiding inside a big wooden horse.

6. During thunderstorms there are electrical charges high in the atmosphere that are only visible from space. They appear in various colours, and shoot upwards. They have been given the name of a legendary creature. What are they called?

Answer: Sprites

These stunning lightning effects were theorised about since the early 1700s, but could not be proven until the University of Minnesota accidentally photographed them on July 6, 1989. Since then, they have been captured on film many times. Most often the colours are reddish/orange with blue tendrils.

9. Codenamed "Longhorn", which operating system did Microsoft release initially in 2006 and generally in 2007?

Answer: Windows Vista

Vista's predecessor, Windows XP, was launched in 2001 and Microsoft trumpeted the arrival of Vista. However, compatibility proved a problem for many non-Microsoft devices, which led to much criticism and the development and release of its successor, Windows 7 was accelerated. Windows 7 was codenamed "Vienna" but it means nothing to me!

10. Alternatively known as tetramethylenediamine and pentamethylenediamine, which of the following pairs of aptly-named organic compounds are produced by decaying animal tissue and are responsible for its stench?

Answer: putrescine and cadaverine

Putrescine and cadaverine are organic compounds produced when animal tissue is in the decomposition process. They have a terrible stench when smelled by human beings and are toxic in large doses. The smell has likely had beneficial effects, since human beings don't have the physiology necessary to eat decaying flesh as some other animals do.
