Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who were the two people that launched/created GNU and Linux, respectively?

Answer: Richard Stallman and Linus Torvalds

Richard Stallman is known for heading up the Free Software Foundation as well as launching the well-known GNU Project. Linus Torvalds created the Linux kernel in the early '90s and in the early 21st century his creation can be found in the majority of tech products---dominating most markets except the desktop computer.
2. What is the name of the Debian-based Linux distribution that means "humanity to others" in an ancient African language?

Answer: Ubuntu

According to Ubuntu Linux's website, 'ubuntu' is an ancient African word meaning, "humanity to others". Simply put, Ubuntu strives to put the user first and in doing so, provide a more user-friendly operating system available free for everyone.

Ubuntu is a Debian-based Linux distro that was created by Mark Shuttleworth and launched in 2004.
3. Manjaro Linux's name is derived from the name of a famous mountain.

Answer: True

The name, 'Manjaro' is inspired by Mount Kilimanjaro, according to the Manjaro Linux Wiki page.
4. What is the Linux distribution, known as one of the most difficult systems to understand, that was originally launched by Judd Vinet in 2002 with the intention of creating an elegant & minimalist operating system?

Answer: Arch

Being able to understand and use Arch Linux is somewhat of a tour de force among Linux users. Due to Arch having minimal software pre-installed, a user must compile the software from the Arch User Repository (think of it as a big supermarket with all the software to fit your wants and needs). This can be very challenging if you are not familiar with terminal commands in Arch.
5. What does the 'A' stand for in the Debian-based Linux distro, "TAILS"?

Answer: Amnesic

TAILS stands for The Amnesic Incognito Live System and is a Debian-based Linux distro focused on security and anonymity. TAILS accomplishes this by utilizing the technologies of Tor & the Tor Browser.
6. Is it possible to get a virus on Linux?

Answer: Yes

Unfortunately, yes, it is still possible to get a virus on Linux, but not very probable. Why? There are three main reasons:
1. Criminals (or, more specifically, those 'devious hackers' that unleash nasty viruses) usually tend to target Microsoft Windows because that's where the most money is.
2. On Windows, software has pretty high clearance when it comes to what can and cannot be accessed on your PC. In Linux, for high enough clearance to cause even remote damage, you need 'root' access. In day to day activities, software can't get root access without the user typing in their administrative password.
3. Because Linux is open source, any programmer around the world can look at the code to Linux. This makes Linux even more secure because if some random programmer notices something funny, they can get right to fixing it. Also, if a questionable piece of software ends up in Linux, every programmer can be notified quickly and any issues can be cleared up as soon as they appear.
7. What is the correct way to update and upgrade your system using the terminal in Ubuntu Linux?

Answer: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

sudo (superuser do) apt-get update (obviously to update) && sudo apt-get upgrade (upgrade)

The terminal is an essential part of the Linux user's daily experience. There of course are other ways to update and upgrade your system, such as graphical update managers that will automatically pop up on your screen when there are new updates for your system. This is much more user-friendly than using the terminal.
8. Which web browser came as the default with Ubuntu 14.04?

Answer: Firefox

Firefox is a lightweight yet powerful web browser that remained the default web browser for Ubuntu 14.04, with Chromium being a close contender.
9. KDE is the default desktop environment for Fedora 21.

Answer: False

The default desktop environment for Fedora 21 is GNOME. This is also the desktop environment for Ubuntu although Ubuntu also includes the Unity graphical shell.
10. Which release number of Ubuntu was given the code-name of "Saucy Salamander"?

Answer: '13.10'

Ubuntu 13.10 was released on October 17, 2013 and marked the first release of Ubuntu for phones as well as Ubuntu Core for 64-bit ARM systems. There were also extensive updates added throughout the system to help keep Ubuntu clean and fresh.
