Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My new computer rocks the LCD screen! If you wouldn't mind plugging the monitor cable in-- I don't know where it goes, I just know it looks pretty cool! The acronym LCD stands for which of these?

Answer: Liquid Crystal Display

Does that mean my computer screen is powered by liquid?! Well, to an extent. The LC of LCD stands for Liquid Crystal, a material through which light is passed to create images on the screen. This often allows for more crisp images than a normal screen.
The LCD was developed to replace the CRT (cathode ray tube) display which was once prominent in monitor and TV screens. You may also know about plasma screens which, contrary to my less-than-knowledgeable beliefs, does not contain human blood. Plasma screens contain gases, the cells of which are very much different from LCDs.
2. Right on-- Keys to please, eh? I got this fancy new keyboard with my brand new computer; it's pretty cool. Normally the QWERTY keyboard is used by most computer owners. Which of these is not another keyboard layout?

Answer: ZYXWVU

The QWERTY keyboard refers to the fact that the letters Q-W-E-R-T-Y line the top row of the peripheral (followed by U-I-O-P). This standard layout was created in 1878, long before the first computers but shortly after the advent of typewriters and moving text.
The AZERTY board is similarly structured, but many of the keys were reorganized for French users (though these have been phased out). QWERTZ is also used in Europe and includes several accented letters (most of which aren't used in English). Finally, HCESAR is obsolete and was originally used in Portugal. It was overtaken by QWERTY, however.
But yeah! Plug it in! Let's get these things a-typin'!
3. Look at this! It's red! Red like fire! That makes it cool. If I plug this into my brand new computer it allows me to move which of these onscreen?

Answer: Cursor

Although older mice will have a trackball and many newer mice use scroll wheels for the sake of convenience, the cursor is what ends up being guided onscreen. For most computers this involves a small arrow which turns into a text cursor when placed over text boxes and word processing programs. On laptops, the mouse is usually replaced by a trackpad; you can even buy these separately should you decide a mouse isn't really your thing. But this is exciting! This mouse came with the computer! Now I just need a wicked awesome mousepad...maybe something with flames! Yeah! Rock on, new computer!
4. The sales guy was nice enough to throw in a free printer! Look at this thing; it does everything! Well, it prints. But I need that! This printer is a laser printer. Does a laser printer use liquid ink?

Answer: No

Laser printers use toner-- black and different colours-- to copy an image from what's onscreen. Older printers, especially home printers, used ink (and many still do) but while this typically costs less, it provides for lower-quality images. While ink cartridges are usually refillable, laser toner cartridges are more costly to replace. I'd suggest you plug this in for me (I don't seem to be able to hook up anything) but the thing didn't come with a printer cable...do they ever? Most printers plug into the computer via USB, but the other end is usually a firewire connection. Each sold separately.
5. See, my printer isn't an all-in-one so I also received a scanner! Best ever! If I were to scan the rhino I've placed into the device, what would happen?

Answer: It would be sent to the computer as an image

A flatbed scanner is plugged into the computer much like the printer and, in many cases, can be found combined with a printer and/or photocopier. To use it, you place the item you want to scan onto the glass surface and, when it scans, it appears on the computer screen for manipulation. For many, this is a great way to stick old photos or documents onto a computer to remove red-eye and do some touch-ups. For some, it's the only way to get that old Polaroid onto Facebook.
And now I've got a scanner! Yay! Best purchase EVER!
6. Isn't this COOL?! The guy who sold me the computer gave me this neat device so that I can make video calls over Skype or Facebook. What is the six-letter name for this object that I can plug into my computer?

Answer: Webcam

A webcam, clearly a combination of the words 'Web' and 'Camera', is an item that is placed on top of the monitor, aimed at the computer user in order to capture their image. Many webcams can take still photos, but they're better used for video calling. Applications like Skype and Facebook video chatting allow users to converse in real-time using webcams and microphones. In fact, most newer computers include both built in.
Unfortunately, my new computer doesn't have them built in. On the bright side, I got mine free. GOOD DEAL! It pays to shop around for something like this.
7. My brand-new computer doesn't have enough ports to run all of my cool, new accessories! That's why I got a hub thrown in for free. This hub holds four USB devices. What does USB stand for?

Answer: Universal Serial Bus

USB is one of the most common connectors for computer peripherals out there and connecting one to your computer may alleviate any stress you may have by switching between them, especially when your ports are in the back of a tower. USB stands for Universal Serial Bus and it is specially designed to both transmit data (from a keyboard, mouse, flash drive, etc.) and provide power to the device to ensure it runs.

There are a number of different USB styles out there though Type A is the most popular. USB ports can also be found on newer video game consoles. My suggestion? Everybody should get aboard this bus! The new computer bus! These things are AWESOME!
8. See, I like to use my computer for wicked cool video games! The sales guy thought of everything! For which of these would I be most likely to use a joystick?

Answer: A flight simulator

Joysticks are much better known for being used in older games, mostly flight simulators due to the fact that it would make them more realistic, although shooters are also common joystick games. The joystick has since fallen out of favour due to their high cost and lack of support, especially from more famous online games (mostly MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games like "World of Warcraft"). You would probably be burdened using one while playing on FunTrivia; "Bejeweled", a puzzle game, would likely not benefit from its use; "FarmVille", played over Facebook, isn't highly-compatible either. But hey! I've got a joystick and it came free.

This is awesome! Who wouldn't use one of these?
9. I told the sales guy I have a digital camera so he suggested I pick this up; it wasn't included but it seemed like a great deal. This is my new memory card reader! Which of these is not read by a camera memory card reader?

Answer: Flash Drive

A Flash Drive is memory stick designed for computer data-- you'd probably refer to it as a Jump Drive or a USB Stick and it is not made for a digital camera. Digital camera cards usually contain smaller, flatter cards. The SD Card is a standard memory unit (as is the xD Card) while the Memory Stick and the Pro Duo are Sony-produced cards.

The MicroSD Card is made for smaller devices (ie. cell phones) and usually come with an adapter to plug into a card reader. These memory units are also used for video game consoles. But yeah! Photos-a-mundo! Sure, I paid for this one out of my own pocket, but this was only necessary!
10. Okay. This wasn't included either, but the sales guy said it was a must-have. This is still a deal! Top-of-the-line! He said I needed a keyboard and I said I already had one, but this one was different-- what type of keyboard, as depicted, is used to transmit digital signals which correspond to sample sounds?

Answer: MIDI Keyboard

The MIDI Keyboard is an interesting peripheral, known as a controller, especially for those who enjoy creating music. Plugging this into a computer allows a user to create and record music or associate certain sounds to each note to create something completely new.

A series of available programs allow a player to completely customize their creations while additional add-ons only enhance the capabilities. Several other instruments have MIDI versions including drums, guitars, and woodwinds. And hey! I've got one! I mean, I have no real musical talent, but I have this! Rock on! Right? RIGHT?!
