Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bob is building a linear fence with 8 poles two metres high. If he places the poles 1.6 metres apart and builds his fence between these poles, how long will his fence be?

Answer: 11.2

If there are eight poles, there are only seven pieces of fence needed BETWEEN the poles.
2. Alice lives in a house. The house has four floors, the ground floor has twice as many windows as the first floor. The first floor has three times as many windows as the second floor, the second floor has three times as many windows as the top floor. The top floor has 4 windows. How many windows does the house have?

Answer: 124

The top floor has 4 windows. The second floor has (4x3) 12 windows. The first floor has (12x3) 36 windows, and the bottom floor has (36x2) 72 windows.

4 + 12 + 36 + 72 = 124 windows.
3. Tom is three times as old as Harry who is four times as old as Rupert. Rupert's younger sister is half Rupert's age. If Rupert's sister is three years old, how old is Tom?

Answer: 72

Rupert's sister is 3, therefore Rupert is 6, Harry 24, and therefore Tom is 72.
4. Simone goes to the cinema with Harriet, her best friend. Simone has £10, and Harriet has £15. They pay for the cinema tickets, but Simone hasn't got enough money. How much was each ticket if Simone gives Harriet her £10, Harriet pays for both tickets, and has £3 change? You may assume the tickets cost the same.

Answer: 11

£10 + £15 = £25. If there is £3 change, then the tickets must have cost £11 each.
5. Chris pays for two plane tickets for him and Emma-Jo to go to Greece for seven nights. Emma-Jo pays for the accommodation. Chris pays £20 more than Emma-Jo, and the total cost of the planes and accommodation was £384. How much is the accommodation per night?

Answer: 26

If the total cost is £384, then the cost of the accommodation must be £182. Seven nights accommodation means that the cost of the accommodation is £26 per night! Hope you enjoyed the quiz.
