Question 9 of 10
9. Jonathan and Tim started running toward each other. Jonathan at 16 yards per minute and Tim at 18 yards per minute. If they were 1,360 yards apart when they started running, how long will it take them to collide? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. An aircraft,which can fly at a maximum speed of 30 km/h in still air, intends to fly in the shortest time possible from point A to point B,with B lying 850 km to the north-west of A. The wind is blowing at a speed of 20 km/h in the direction due north. Find the course that the pilot must steer his aircraft. Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A mystery number was tripled and then increased by 100, and the result was 12 less than the number. Find the mystery number.

Answer: -56

3x+100 = x-12

2x = -112

x = -56
2. Andy, Brandon, and Cameron ordered a plate of chalupas at Taco Bell. Andy ate 2 more chalupas than Brandon. Brandon ate 4 more chalupas than Cameron, and they ate 10 chalupas in total. How many chalupas did Brandon consume?

Answer: 4

Andy consumed 6, Brandon 4, and Cameron 0 chalupas.
a = b+2
b = c+4
a+a-2+a-6 = 10
a = 6

I hope Cameron had something else to eat!
3. Yesterday, I had 84 photos in album a, and 20 photos in album b. Today, I put x photos in each album. Now, the number of photos in album a is three times the number of photos of album b. Find x.

Answer: 12

(84-20)/2 - 20 = 12
4. Mary is about to pay for 5 items at the grocery store. The prices of the items are $7.99, $4.99, $2.99, $1.99, and $0.99 . Mary will pay with a twenty-dollar bill. Which of the following is closest to the percentage of the money that she will receive in change?

Answer: 5 %

If you are really good at your 99 times table, you would see that the cent value is 4.95. Now we add that to the dollar value which is 14. The total cost is therefore 18.95. Dividing by 20 would give you 94.75, so you would need to subtract one to get 5.25 percent of 20. So therefore 5 % is the answer.
5. If 10% of 20% of a number is 12, what is 20% of 10% of that same number?

Answer: 12

Let that number be x. We have:
(10%).(20%.x)= 12
= (10/100).(20/100.x)= 12
= 20/100.10/100. x = 12
= (20%).(10%.x) = 12
6. Pick a number. Add 9 to it. Multiply the total by 3. Subtract 13. Divide the total by 2. Subtract 3/2 the original number. What is the answer?

Answer: 7

First represent the number as x...

x+9
3(x+9)
3x+27-13
3/2x+14/2
3/2x+14/2-3/2x
Thus the number always equals 14/2, which is 7.
7. What are the odds that one will choose a green marble from a bag containing 5 green marbles, 3 blue marbles, and 10 white marbles? HINT: DON'T think probability!

Answer: 5/13

Since we are NOT dealing with probability, the numerator consists of the favorable number (5) and the denominator the unfavorable number (13).
8. What is the length of the hypotenuse of a right triangle if the length of the other two sides added together and then squared is 100, assuming that those sides are congruent?

Answer: 5*sqrt(2)

Since the smaller two sides are congruent, thus the same in length, the only number when added to itself and then squared that equals 100 is 5. So, each of the smaller sides is 5. Using the Pythagorean Theorem, the hypotenuse = sqrt(25 + 25) = sqrt(50) = 5*sqrt(2).
9. Jonathan and Tim started running toward each other. Jonathan at 16 yards per minute and Tim at 18 yards per minute. If they were 1,360 yards apart when they started running, how long will it take them to collide?

Answer: 40 minutes

They each together make up 34 yards per minute, and thus 1360/34= 40 minutes. Some awfully slow runners, if you ask me!

Answer: N 16.9 degrees W

Think of the direction vectors as sides of a triangle. Then we have the 20 km/hr vector at an angle of 45 degrees with the course vector (which must point in the direction of B from A, which is 135 degrees). Then, the 30 km/hr vector must be at such an angle as to make the resultant of the 30 km/hr vector and the 20 km/hr vector point at 135 degrees. Draw triangle ABC with AC=20, BC=30, and angle A=45 degrees.

Then sin 45/30 = sin B/20, from which B= arcsin(sqrt(2)/3) . Then C= 180-45-arcsin(sqrt(2)/3) = 16.9 degrees north of west.
