Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Geologists classify volcanoes into four main groups: cinder cone, stratovolcano or composite, shield, and lava dome. One example of the cinder cone is pictured here. Located in the Mexican state of Michoacán, which of the following volcanoes is it?

Answer: Parícutin

Parícutin last erupted in 1952. It began life on a farm near the village for which it was named. What makes this volcano unusual is the fact that geologists have studied it from its beginnings to its extinction. A volcano becomes extinct when its lava supply is cut off.
2. Another type of volcano, composite cone, is located in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. It has the distinction of being the most symmetrical conical volcano in the world. What is its name?

Answer: Shishaldin

Located on Unimak Island, this volcano is unusual in that it doesn't have a lave plug or dome, just a deep open vent. When it erupts gas bubbles emerge from the open vent and create a type of lava fountain. As the lava flows down the flanks of the volcano it leaves behind a smooth layer.

This is what makes Shishaldin so symmetrical. In May 2014, geologists detected tremors and an increase in surface temperatures, both signs of a possible eruption.
3. The very existence of the Hawaiian Islands came about from volcanic eruptions. Which one of these volcanoes means "Long Mountain" in Hawaiian?

Answer: Mauna Loa

Mauna Loa is an example of a shield volcano. This type of volcano has a low profile and appears more spread out than other types of volcanoes. This is due to the volcanic eruptions having ground flows of lava that are capable of traveling far distances. Typically the width is 20 times the height. Shield volcanoes can be found all over the world and beyond. Olympus Mons, located on Mars, is a large shield volcano.
4. Another of Alaska's active stratovolcanoes erupted in June 2014. Which of the following volcanoes is it?

Answer: Mount Pavlof

Alaska has roughly 52 active volcanoes. Fortunately most are remotely located on the Aleutian Islands. However, plumes of ash can be high enough to interfere with air travel anywhere in the world where active volcanoes exist.
5. This well-known volcano and mountain in Japan is a favorite destination for tourists. Its distinctive snow-capped cone shape makes it easily recognizable. Located west of Tokyo, what is its name?

Answer: Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji is unusual in that it is not only a popular tourist site but a sacred mountain as well. Shinto is indigenous to Japan and followers of this religion consider Mount Fuji to be sacred. Thousands of tourists from around the world come to climb this sacred mountain each year.
6. New Zealand is home to a volcano that, although dormant, is considered to be an active stratovolcano. Located on North Island, it began erupting 130,000 years ago. What is this volcano called?

Answer: Taranaki/Egmont

Taranaki, also known as Egmont, is New Zealand's largest volcano by volume. It last erupted in 1655 but geologists know that it is possible that the volcano will erupt again. If a volcano has had at least one eruption in 10,000 years it is considered to be active.
7. The Democratic Republic of the Congo has one of the world's most active volcanoes. It is Africa's most active volcano. What is it called?

Answer: Nyamuragira

Located in the Virunga Mountains, Nyamuragira is a shield volcano. The last major eruption occurred in 2011. In the Kinyarwanda language, the name of this volcano means "to herd cows."
8. In May 1980 a devastating volcano erupted in the state of Washington and wreaked havoc on the surrounding environment. Which volcano is it?

Answer: Mount St. Helens

Approximately 230 acres of forest were scorched and 57 people lost their lives as a result. Bridges, highways, and homes were destroyed. I visited the volcano site in 2009 and then again in 2014 and the difference in the landscape is amazing. Much of the scorched vegetation in 2009 was replaced by leafy trees and vegetation green with life.

It's a long drive to the summit and in five short years it was good to see that the landscape has revived.
9. School children learn about a volcano that erupted in 79 AD and destroyed the Italian city of Pompeii. It has erupted many times since and is a constant threat to those millions of people who live around its base. Name this historic volcano.

Answer: Mount Vesuvius

Vesuvius not only destroyed Pompeii but the city of Herculaneum as well. Overlooking the city of Naples, the subduction zone over which it stands connects a line of volcanoes including Mount Etna and Stromboli. From photos of the volcano's victims encased in ash, Vesuvius erupted with a vengeance.
10. South America is no stranger to volcanic activity. Many of the countries on this continent have active volcanoes. Ecuador is no exception. What is the sacred mountain located 31 miles south of Quito, the country's capital city?

Answer: Cotopaxi

Cotopaxi stands among a group of volcanoes lying within the Pacific Ring of Fire. Much like the Japanese, who regard Mount Fiji as sacred, the Andean people consider Cotopaxi to be a sacred mountain. And like Mount Fuji, hikers enjoy climbing to the summit. The first eruption of Cotopaxi occurred in 1534.
