Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Do all mammals sleep?

Answer: Yes

There are some birds and reptiles that don't.
2. There are two states of sleep - NREM sleep (non-rapid eye movement sleep) and REM sleep (rapid eye movement sleep). During which state do dreams occur?

Answer: rem

Scientists are not sure what the function of REM sleep (and dreaming) is, but it must do something important. Experiments have shown that rats who are deprived of REM sleep die after a couple of weeks.
3. In order to get a good night's sleep, what should you avoid consuming after 4 or so PM? (Be logical!)

Answer: caffeine

The main source of caffeine is coffee, of course. However, cola-drinks, some teas and even chocolate contain a little caffeine, too.
4. What is the approximate percentage of adults who are habitual snorers?

Answer: 25 %

About 45 percent snore at least occasionally. Snoring is more common with men, overweight people and the aged. It can be a serious problem both socially and medically, but fortunately it can often be cured!
5. Michael seems to be sleepy all the time. He falls asleep in the most unlikely circumstances, for example while eating or having a conversation. He doesn't snore. Which sleeping disorder does Michael most probably have?

Answer: Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is usually caused by the lack of two brain chemicals - hypocretin-1 and hypocretin-2. One of the symptoms of the disorder is waking up at night with an intense craving for sweets.
6. What is somnambulism?

Answer: Sleepwalking

It is often thought that sleepwalkers are acting out a dream, while in fact they aren't - sleepwalking doesn't occur during REM sleep (that is during the state of sleep when people dream).
7. Which of these famous songs is said to be inspired by a dream?

Answer: "Yesterday" by The Beatles

Another example of dream-inspired works is "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" by Robert Louis Stevenson.
8. What is lucid dreaming?

Answer: The dreamer realizes that s/he is dreaming while the dream is happening

One can actually learn lucid dreaming!
9. Usually men sleep longer than women. True or false?

Answer: False

Actually it is the other way round - women have the tendency to sleep longer than men. It is not yet certain whether they physically need more sleep or whether it is just a matter of preference.
10. Frightening dreams that sometimes wake the dreamer are called what?

Answer: Nightmares

Having a nightmare is not a pleasant thing. However, I hope you enjoyed this quiz!
