Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My bed is so very comfortable as my head sinks into the pillows. Sleep is not far away. My eye movements are slowing down and I have a sensation of falling....deeper and deeper. What do you call the sudden twitchy muscle movement that I sometimes wake up to during the first phase of sleep?

Answer: Hypnic myoclonia

Hypnic myoclonia is an involuntary jerking movement felt once or twice a night. The sensation can occur more frequently on a person who is deprived of sleep or trying to fight sleep. The feeling is similar to the 'jump' we make when startled.
2. I am now entering the next phase which is a light sleep where my mind and body are preparing me to enter a very deep sleep. Which of the following does not happen during this stage?

Answer: Eye movements increase

At this stage the conscious awareness of the external environment disappears. This is the longest phase of sleep which can last for about 50% of the whole sleeping cycle.
3. I couldn't wake up now unless somebody physically threw me off the bed! What is the name of the brain wave that signifies very deep sleep?

Answer: Delta wave

Delta waves signify a profound sleep level where consciousness of self is totally lost and even dreams do not occur. Brain waves oscillate less than 4 cycles per second. Theta waves between 4 to 7 cycles per second. Alpha waves between 8 to 13 cycles per second. Beta waves between 14 to 30 cycles per second signify when you are awake and totally active.
4. I am now having a very deep sleep and I am lucky that I have not been prone to wetting my bed. What is the medical term for bed wetting?

Answer: Nocturnal enuresis

Many people believe that bed wetting can only affect the younger generation but this is not the case. Bed wetting can also happen in adults and the contributory factors can include anxiety, stress, constipation or urinary tract infection.
5. Of course I don't snore in my sleep. Well, maybe just a little. Can you tell me what part of the body vibrates while a person is snoring?

Answer: Uvula, soft palate and tongue

While you are sleeping, the muscles relax and the airway can sometimes become blocked. Snoring occurs when the soft tissue inside the mouth, nose and throat start to relax and vibrate. Snoring has been linked to divorce and family breakdown because of sleep deprivation.
6. It is now approximately 90 minutes after I first fell asleep and my eyelids are starting to twitch. What is this stage called?

Answer: rem

During the stage of sleep when rapid eye movement occurs, the electrical activity in the brain increases and our body temperature rises though our muscles remain relaxed. This is the stage when our most vivid dreams occur.
7. While I am dreaming perhaps you can answer my next question. What is the name for the scientific study of dreams?

Answer: Oneirology

Oneirology comes from the Greek word 'oneiros' which means dream. A person who studies oneirology is called an oneirologist. Interest in modern dream research revived during the 1950's when studies proved that there is a link between REM sleep and dreaming.
8. I am dreaming of a castle. In the background I can see trees, the sky and the beautiful stonework bathed in the last rays of the sun. Are people able to see their dreams in colour?

Answer: Yes

Most people dream in colour but this is sometimes overlooked because colour is such a natural part of our everyday life. Only 12% of people dream in black and white. Scientific research indicates that perceptions have changed with the introduction of the colour television.
9. I rarely suffer with bad dreams or nightmares but for some people this can be a more regular occurrence. Which phobia is the intense fear of dreams?

Answer: Oneirophobia

Oneirophobia, or the fear of dreams, may turn a person into an insomniac which can have a profound impact on their health. Somniphobia is the fear of sleeping. Hypnophobia is the fear of being hypnotised. Bogyphobia is a real word I promise you! It is the fear of bogeymen or bogies.
10. Many people tell me I look drained and tired which may be due to the fact that I am not getting enough beauty sleep. How dare they insult me! What is the best way to get enough sleep?

Answer: Avoid caffeine and stimulants as this will increase brain activity

A lot of different areas of our body are being refreshed and revitalised as we dream a pleasant dream. Not only are our muscles being healed but major organs are being given an overhaul as well.
