Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What types of muscle do you not control?

Answer: Involuntary Muscles

Involuntary muscles are muscles that work on their own, such as your heart and the muscles in your organs. Their actions are controlled by the brain sending nerve messages. Involuntary muscles carry out a lot of the bodily functions.
2. Which of these is not one of the three types of muscle tissue?

Answer: Flexible Muscle

The skeletal muscles are the muscles that control voluntary movement, such as walking, running, and jumping. Smooth muscles are involuntary muscles that are found in your organs. They help with bodily functions such as digestion. Cardiac muscle is an involuntary muscle.

The reason I made it singular is because it is only found in your heart. It doesn't tire easily and contracts repeatedly. These contractions are your heartbeat.
3. What is a strong connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone called?

Answer: Tendon

Tendon, also known as sinew, is stringy tissue that connects a bone to a muscle. Bones and tendons work together to help movement. The thickest tendon in your body is your Achilles' tendon which is located above your heel.
4. Approximately how many muscles are in the human body?

Answer: 600

There are approximately 640 muscles in your body. Most of the muscles in your body work in pairs. There are about 300 pairs of muscles in your body.
5. Before exercise or play, what is it recommended you should do?

Answer: Carry out an active warm up

Warming up may help prevent damage to your muscles. The muscle may cramp or be torn if you don't stretch first. Taking steroids causes many dangerous side effects. Besides, if you are playing a sport, taking performance-enhancing drugs may get you banned from that sport.
6. Muscles can only contract (pull) and not extend (push).

Answer: True

Muscle cells can only contract. Because of this, skeletal muscles must work in pairs. While one muscle contracts, the other relaxes. For example, when you show your biceps, the triceps contracts while your biceps relax.
7. Often erroneously claimed to be the strongest muscle in your body, which of these actually consists of eight different muscles working together?

Answer: Tongue

Your tongue is the organ inside your mouth. It allows you to taste and talk. Whenever you use your mouth for talking, eating, etc. it gives your tongue a workout.
8. There are muscles located around your eyes.

Answer: True

There are smooth muscles inside your eyes. They help your eyes move and are known as extraocular muscles. There are six of them in your eyes. There is also one muscle that controls eyebrow elevation called the levator palpebrae. The muscles in your eyes are also the hardest working in your body.
9. In what part of your body are your smallest muscles found?

Answer: Ear

Just like your smallest bones, your smallest muscles are found in your ear. Located in the middle ear are your stapedius and your tensor tympani. Although small, they are very important. They hold your ears together and they work with the ear drums to help your hearing.
10. Most people know about the gluteus maximus muscle located in your buttocks. However, is there a gluteus minimus muscle in your body?

Answer: Yes

The gluteus maximus is your buttocks. The gluteus minimus is located in your buttocks too. Your buttocks are like layers. The gluteus maximus is outside while another layer, inside your gluteus maximus, is the gluteus minimus. This muscle helps hip extension.
