Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the triangular plate of bone which is located to the side and back of the chest wall?

Answer: scapula

The scapula is more commonly known as the shoulder blade and has many important bony features from which muscles arise.
2. This muscle arises from the third, fourth and fifth ribs and is inserted into the coracoid process of the scapula.

Answer: Pectoralis minor

When the pectoralis minor contracts, it draws the coracoid process of the scapula downwards and therefore depresses the shoulder. It can also aid in the process of respiration by raising the rib cage.
3. The triceps muscle obtains its nerve supply from the ulnar nerve.

Answer: False

The triceps is supplied by the posterior cord of the brachial plexus, the radial nerve. As its name suggests, it arises by means of three heads. The long head arises from the infraglenoid tubercle of the scapula, the lateral head from the back of the humerus just above the radial groove (the radial nerve travels along the radial groove) and the medial head from the back of the humerus and intermuscular septa below the level of the radial groove. All three heads unite to form a very strong tendon which is inserted into the olecranon process of the ulna.
4. The process of the ulna which projects around the posterior aspect of the humerus is called the olecranon but what is the process which projects around the anterior aspect of the humerus called?

Answer: coronoid process

Together, the olecranon and coronoid processes form the trochlear notch of the ulna. This notch articulates with a distal part of the humerus called the trochlea.
5. The long head of the biceps brachii passes over the upper end of the humerus INSIDE the capsule of the shoulder joint.

Answer: True

The long head arises from the supraglenoid tubercle of the scapula and leaves the capsule by passing along the intertubercular groove. The short head of biceps arises from the coracoid process and unites with the long head in the upper arm. The muscle is inserted into the radial tuberosity of the radius and also the anterior aspect of the proximal ulna in the form of the bicipital aponeurosis.
6. What is the name of the membrane which ties the shafts of the radius and ulna together?

Answer: interosseous membrane

The interosseous membrane also serves as an origin base for certain muscles.
7. The head of the radius articultes with the radial notch of the ulna to form the proximal radioulnar joint. A fibrous loop holds the radius in place here. What is its name?

Answer: annular ligament

Since the annular ligament is attached loosely to the neck of the radius, the lower part of the proximal radioulnar joint is weak. The annular ligament is therefore assisted by another small ligament called the quadrate ligament which extends between the lower margin of the radial notch and the neck of the radius.
8. The cubital fossa is a triangular intermuscular interval situated in front of the elbow joint. It is bounded by two muscles, one being brachioradialis. What is the name of the other?

Answer: pronator teres

Structures within the cubital fossa include the biceps tendon with its bicipital aponeurosis, the brachial artery and the median nerve.
9. The palmaris longus muscle of the front of the forearm travels through the osseofascial tunnel at the wrist before reaching its insertion.

Answer: False

The palmaris longus travels over the surface of the flexor retinaculum of the wrist and inserts into the dense fascia of the palm of the hand. It is a weak flexor of the wrist.
10. What is the name of the muscle that arises from the radius and interosseous membrane and is inserted into the base of the proximal phalanx of the thumb?

Answer: extensor pollicis brevis

The function of the extensor pollicis brevis is to extend the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb.
