Barophobia is defined as the irrational fear of gravity. Sufferers fear falling just because of gravitational pull, or that they will will be completely crushed by the force of gravity. Some, however, go in the opposite direction and fear that gravity will fail and they will just float away and be lost forever.

People with this phobia are convinced that if they open their eyes they will see something awful happening, or something awful will happen to them. This can lead to quite debilitating panic attacks, palpitations and other high anxiety symptoms, including a fear of impending death.

People with this phobia may fear their own knees, other people's knees or both. They will always wear clothes that cover their own knees and will go to extreme lengths to avoid seeing the knees of others. The sight of a knee will, in the worst cases, cause a panic attack, and great anxiety in milder cases.

A fear of long words leaves the sufferer unable to write, read or listen to anything that contains words over one or two syllables. Their conversations are also normally conducted in short words only. They do not usually lack the vocabulary to use or comprehend long words; they are just too scared of them to do so.

The fear of being buried alive due to misdiagnosis of death is probably as old as mankind. In the past, people had bells attached to their graves with pull strings inside their coffin. Others left instructions for their arteries to be slit before they they were buried or they were buried with tools to enable them to break out of their coffin if necessary.

Answer: The Northern Lights

Many people travel miles to see the Northern Lights, but for those suffering from this phobia the sight of them fills them with dread. They feel menaced by the flickering sky, as though nature is out of control and somehow endangers them. Typically they will not only avoid living or traveling to areas where the Northern Lights are seen, but they will also avoid television and other media pictures of them.

Answer: Hadephobia

Those who suffer from hadephobia fear the demons and tortures of Hell, or fear doing something that will cause them to be sent to Hell. They often become over-religious in an effort to avoid this punishment.

The fear of heaven is not a fear of angels or God; it is more a fear of the day of judgment and the world coming to an end.

Dendrophobes avoid anywhere at all with trees, so parks, hiking trails, forests, and even large gardens with a tree or two in them are all areas they would not want to be in. They fear being hit by a falling tree. They also fear the shadows cast by trees at night, especially when they move around in the wind; this makes them feel threatened by forces outside of their control.

This is a fear of the use of or anything to do with numbers. Phobics can fear all numbers, and will avoid bank accounts, financial transactions, even writing the date numerically on a letter, or may fear just one number, or odd or even numbers. Whichever route their fear takes, this is a phobia that leads to severe difficulties in living an ordinary everyday life.

For these phobics, their biggest nightmare is to be involved in a lawsuit. They live in constant dread of doing something that will cause someone to sue them. They are convinced that all of their daily interactions with other people could lead to some form of lawsuit, and because of this they often become very isolated and withdrawn from society.
