Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the most common types of dinosaur to roam the earth during the late Cretaceous period was the Tyrannosaurus. What does this word mean?

Answer: Tyrant lizard

The Tyrannosaurus rex is a well known species of dinosaur due to its appearance in films, but this big beast dates back 67 to 65.5 million years ago. The name Tyrannosaurus is from the Greek tyrannos which means "tyrant," and sauros which means "lizard". The animal was on average 6 metres tall, 12.3 metres long, and they weighed up to 8 tonnes.
2. Prior to 2013, scientists believed that brontosaurus came from which genus of dinosaur?

Answer: Apatosaurus

Scientists believed the dinosaur popularly known as brontosaurus came from the genus, Apatosaurus, until new remains were found and another study carried out. They discovered the brontosaurus was in fact its own genus. The dinosaur reached 21 meters long, 4.5 meters tall and weighed about 30-35 tonnes. This giant lived during the late Jurassic period, approximately 150 million years ago. The long tail at the back of the animal is believed to have been used in a whipping motion to deter predators.
3. Related to the Diplodocus, which species of dinosaur is believed to have been the longest in size?

Answer: Seismosaurus

The Seismosaurus was a plant-eating dinosaur which lived during the late Jurassic period. The name was taken from the Greek words meaning "Earthquake Reptile" because it is believed the earth trembled when it walked by. It reached approximately 6 metres in height and up to 52 metres in length.
4. Which of these describes the main diet of a Velociraptor?

Answer: Carnivorous

This predator was believed to have had feathers and could reach running speeds of up to 40mph. They lived during the late Cretaceous period, approximately 75 to 71 million years ago. These fast paced creatures would use their sharp claws to hunt and capture their prey. The first fossil of a Velociraptor was found in Mongolia, 1924, by American paleontologist Henry Fairfield Osborn.
5. Which of the following was NOT a type of flying reptile?

Answer: Plateosaurus

Palaeontologists classify the Dimorphodon, Pterodactyl and Quetzalcoatlus under the order of Pterosauria. The English translation for Pterosauria is "winged lizard". It is believed they all lived through different time periods: Dimorphodon through the early Jurassic, Pterodactyl through late Jurassic, and Quetzalcoatlus through the late Cretaceous period.
6. Which dinosaur has a name that means "roofed lizard"?

Answer: Stegosaurus

The Stegosaurus was called "roofed lizard" or "covered lizard" because of the spines on its back. It existed during the late Jurassic period, around 155 to 150 million years ago. It was a large, cumbersome looking beast with a short neck and small head which contained its brain -- the same size of brain that a dog has.
7. T. horridus is a species of which dinosaur?

Answer: Triceratops

The herbivorous Triceratops lived during the late Cretaceous period in what is now the region of North America. The name literally means "three-horned face", although the creature only had two large horns, and a smaller horn on its snout which was possibly made from something else.
8. Which creature was believed to be a transitional form between dinosaurs and our current-day bird?

Answer: Archaeopteryx

Archaeopteryx is believed to be the oldest known bird. It lived between 150.8 and 148.5 million years ago during the late Jurassic period. It is believed to have been the same size as a pigeon.
9. The name Brachiosaurus, translated into English, means "arm lizard". Why was it given this name?

Answer: Its front legs were longer than its hind legs

Brachiosaurus lived during the late Jurassic period, approximately 154 to 153 million years ago. Palaeontologist Elmer S. Riggs, discovered the first fossil in Colorado, in 1903. This large and slow herbivore is believed to have been very gentle and may have lived up to 100 years old.
10. Palaeontologist Henry Fairfield Osborn, named me in 1924 because he thought I stole dinosaur eggs and ate them as part of my diet. What was I called?

Answer: Oviraptor

Since the first Oviraptor fossil was found and named, it is now unclear whether these ostrich-looking creatures actually stole eggs as it was first believed. They existed 75 million years ago in Asia during the late Cretaceous period. This omnivore was on average two metres long and weighed around 30 kilogrammes.
