Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The main character in "Bewitched", that of Samantha Stephens, was played by which lovely actress?

Answer: Elizabeth Montgomery

Elizabeth Montgomery (1933-1995) played Samantha for the entire length of this excellent series, appearing in a total of 254 episodes in all. During this time, we see her character Samantha going from a young newly married woman, who happens to be a witch married to the mortal Darrin, right through to the birth of two of the couple's children.

Her main role in the series is acting as peacemaker between her irascible husband and her equally irascible mother as the two constantly butt horns, with disastrous consequences for Darrin when he raises the ire of that fiery older woman. Samantha, by the use of her magical twitching nose, has to fly to his rescue with the use of counter spells and solutions just in time to save the day.
2. The role of Darrin Stephens, the much put upon husband of Samantha, was played by two men over the course of the series. One was Dick York. Who was the other?

Answer: Dick Sargent

Dick York (1928-1992) played the role of Darrin for the first 156 episodes of "Bewitched". In the early part of his career, he had injured his back badly during the making of a movie. For the rest of his life this caused his enormous pain, but he continued acting in spite of it all.

He was in such agony during the making of "Bewitched" that in the latter part of his time on the series, he often had to be filmed lying in bed or on a couch. He finally couldn't go on any longer, and, with the greatest reluctance, had to give up his role.

His character was not written out of the series but replaced by another actor instead. Dick York spent the greater part of the rest of his life bedridden from this injury, only well enough to occasionally appear in other television series in guest star roles.
3. Where would this show have been without the trouble-making mother of Samantha? Played to perfection by Agnes Moorehead, what was her character's name?

Answer: Endora

Agnes Moorhead played the haughty Endora to perfection, with just the right combination of aloofness, slightly menacing air, and very dark sense of humour. She thoroughly disapproves of her only daughter's marriage to a mortal man, and goes out of her way to interfere in the marriage as often as possible.

She turns Darrin into a series of animals, sends him back into the past, and casts spells on him left, right and centre with the greatest of glee. Agnes (1900-1974) played Endora right through the series, but because she didn't really enjoy television acting, she had it written into her contract that she only appear in eight out of every twelve episodes, to enable her to pursue what she considered to be her true acting career up on the big screen. Though she got on well with her fellow cast members, particularly Elizabeth Montgomery, and rubbed along well with Dick York, she and Dick Sargent (1930-1994), who played the second Darrin, didn't hit it off at all.

He was known to describe her in less than flattering terms on the odd occasion.
4. The nosey and highly excitable neighbour of the Stephens, Mrs Kravitz, was also played by the two actresses over the course of "Bewitched". What was this character's first name?

Answer: Gladys

Gladys Kravitz lives across the street from the Stephens and has witnessed enough strange occurrences in that out-of-this-world household to have her in a constant state of on-going curiosity and agitation. Nobody, least of all her unruffled and disbelieving husband Abner, played by George Tobias (1901-1980), believes her, leaving Gladys in a state of permanent nervous exhaustion as she tries to convince him of all she sees.

When the first Gladys, played by Alice Pearce (1917-1966) passed away from cancer during the second year of filming, she was replaced by actress Sandra Gould (1916-1999).

The character of Gladys is with us through the entire series of "Bewitched", appearing in various episodes, but during the last year of filming, her character is only mentioned now and then, without appearing on screen.
5. Who played the role of Samantha's bumbling, forgetful Aunt Clara who, with great ensuing hilarity, constantly got her incantations mixed up?

Answer: Marion Lorne

Poor old Aunt Clara, a witch rapidly approaching her dotage, is extremely forgetful in fact. Longing to be helpful, she casts a series of spells during the course of the series, which never once turn out right. It takes her some time to remember how to amend them, but in the meantime the results are really unfortunate for the entire Stephens household. Aunt Clara was played by Marion Lorne (1883-1968).

She appeared in only twenty-eight episodes of the series, dying from a heart attack at the beginning of the show's fifth season, but such was her unique acting and character portrayal that her character was not replaced. One of Aunt Clara's little idiosyncrasies is her fondness for collecting doorknobs, and interestingly, Marion Lorne also collected doorknobs as a hobby.

These were used as props in the series.
6. Another larger than life character in "Bewitched" is that of Samantha's father, played by actor Maurice Evans. What was his character's name?

Answer: Maurice

The name Maurice suited the character of Samantha's father so perfectly that it was retained instead of issuing the character with a separate moniker. Maurice Evans (1901-1989) rose to fame as a fine Shakespearean actor in England, and he used this excellent training to bring to the character of Samantha's father a unique comic interpretation that had to be seen to be believed.

His character was immensely powerful, kinglike almost, in keeping with the role of such a powerful warlock. His over the top hamlike acting as his character occasionally sprouts Shakespeare, is balanced perfectly with an air of menace and threat he conveys if he is crossed or his wishes thwarted in any way. Only appearing in twelve episodes over the duration of the show, his presence is such that he seems to have appeared in many more than that.

His is the only character of which Endora, Samantha's mother, is wary. He outranks her both in position and power and the interaction between the two is a delight to see.
7. Who played Samantha's trouble making Uncle Arthur to perfection?

Answer: Paul Lynde

The hilarious Paul Lynde (1926-1982) appeared in various episodes of "Bewitched" between 1965 and 1971 as the troublesome mischief-loving Uncle Arthur, always ready to play a prank or two on the unsuspecting Darrin. One of the most unique aspects to this actor was his distinctive voice which he uses perfectly, along with its accompanying hilarious laugh, as he sits back and watches without any compunction at all, the constant trouble he causes. You had to love him though.

It is only when he goes too far and makes even the forgiving Samantha annoyed with him that he eventually sorts out the havoc he has caused.
8. Alice Ghostley played cousin Esmeralda on "Bewitched" between 1969 and 1972. What role did she fill, apart from being an accident prone cousin?

Answer: Nanny

Cousin Esmeralda, played by Alice Ghostley (1926-2007), is nanny to the Stephens children. Not a very good one, however, as she, like several of Samantha's relatives, tends to be mistake prone when casting her spells. She's lovable and caring though and never miscasts a spell out of malicious intent.

It is always to improve an existing situation that she dips into her range of misquoted and badly worded incantations - with unfortunate consequences. Fortunately, Samantha is usually on hand, sooner or later, to help Esmeralda out of the pickle in which she has either found herself, or has involved the entire Stephens household.
9. Where would a witch be without her medical practitioner to help her recuperate from her witchly woes? What was the name of Samantha's doctor played so hilariously by Bernard Fox?

Answer: Dr Bombay

Bernard Fox (born 1927) brought Dr Bombay to life with aplomb and dash in "Bewitched". Though he only appears in eighteen of the episodes, his huge character is such that he is an instantly recognised figure in the series. Talented but careless, Dr Bombay's initial diagnosis and treatment of each of Samantha's illnesses is always wrong, comically so of course, which sees him returning at the end of each episode to repair the damage he has caused in the interim. Two of the most memorable aspects to Dr Bombay's character are his laugh, a little akin to a donkey's bray, and his ever changing range of companions, young beautiful women he always introduces as his medical assistants.
10. What was the name of Darrin's boss?

Answer: Larry Tate

Played by actor David White (1916-1990) Larry Tate is head of the advertising firm, McMann and Tate, where Darrin spends his working day. His character is that of a rather greedy, opportunistic business man always after the big dollars. He doesn't have any regret at how he goes about this, switching his opinions and stances as quickly as the breeze and blowing Darrin along before him.

He is prone to sacking Darrin now and then and just as quickly rehiring him, until finally, he makes Darrin a full partner in the renamed business firm, McMann, Stevens and Tate. David White played this character for the entire length of the series, appearing in a total of 166 episodes.
