Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. His first diagnosis given was cephalalgia. What should you not do to make him feel better?

Answer: Pat him on the head.

Cephalalgia, or cephalgia, are both medical terms for headache. It doesn't matter what the cause is, be it migrane or trauma.
2. The next diagnosis was cervicalgia. What test was most likely done to come up with this diagnosis?

Answer: Neck X-rays

The cervical spine refers to pain in the neck. The term "cervix" is called that because of its neck-like appearance as it leads to the uterus.
3. The next diagnosis was duodenal hematoma. Where was he most likely hit?

Answer: Upper middle abdomen

The duodenum is the first portion of the intestine between the stomach and jujenum. The duodenum is about twelve finger widths long and hence the origin of its name from Latin "duodeni"- "twelve each."
4. He then was told he had costochondritis. Where would he be hurting?

Answer: Center of the chest

The costochrondritic spaces connect the sternum and ribs and are in the front of the chest adjacent to midline. They are commonly painful from coughing or viral infections, tight bras with wire supports, or trauma.
5. The doctor noted that the patient had a hyphema while examining his head. Which doctor would he most likely follow up with?

Answer: Ophthalmologist

A hyphema is essentially a bruise to the eyeball in the cornea. It looks like a layer of blood in the eyeball. When the eyeball completely fills up with blood, it is called an eight-ball eye. The body will often resorb this, just like any other bruise.
6. Budhu was also given a diagnosis of a fracture of his pubic symphysis. Which X-ray would pick this up?

Answer: Pelvis

The pubic symphysis is the front, central, part of the pelvis.
7. Budhu then sustained a Colles' fracture as he tried to catch himself as he went down. Which treatment would the doctor likely do?

Answer: Splint his wrist

This is a common fracture at the wrist, usually caused by trying to catch yourself while falling. It was named after the Irish surgeon Abraham Colles in 1814.
8. About the only injury Budhu did not get was an epidural hematoma. If he did, which specialist would be needed right away?

Answer: Neurosurgeon

The dura is the covering over the spine. Therefore epidural means above the dura. A hematoma is just a collection of blood. These can push on the brain and cause rapid death. This, unfortunately is what happened to Natasha Richardson. A neurosurgeon can remove a portion of the skull giving space to the brain and will evacuate the clot.
9. Budhu was complaining about pain around his funny bone, but the x-rays were negative. Where would his pain be?

Answer: Elbow

The funny bone is not actually a bone but a nerve at the end of the humerus in the elbow region. The humerus is the bone in the upper arm that connects the shoulder (scapula) to the elbow.
10. His final injury was a fracture of the medial malleolus. What would Budhu say that matches this injury?

Answer: I can't even walk with this ankle pain.

The bones of the ankle have a mallet-like appearance when viewed front to back on radiographs. Hence the malleolus (from Latin malleus - hammer) is the inside portion of the ankle.
