Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Did this FIFA World Cup have a Group Stage?

Answer: No

For the second consecutive FIFA World Cup, the whole tournament was knock-out.
2. Who eventually won the tournament?

Answer: Italy

Italy successfully retained their status as world champions, beating Hungary 4-2 in the final. France were knocked out in the Second Round 3-1 by Italy. Brazil finished third, losing in the semi-final 2-1 to Italy, and beating Sweden 4-2 in the third place playoff. England were still not a part of FIFA in 1938.
3. What was the highest scoring game of the tournament?

Answer: Brazil vs Poland

Brazil vs Poland was a stunning game in the First Round that ended 6-5 to Brazil, after extra-time. Argentina refused to enter, as they believed that the venue of the FIFA World Cup would alternate between South America and Europe, but this was the second in a row to be hosted in Europe.

Italy and Hungary met in the final and ended with 6 goals (4-2). Sweden annihilated lowly Cuba, who did well to reach the quarterfinals in the first place. The score ended 8-0.
4. Which two players both scored five goals in the tournament?

Answer: György Sárosi and Silvio Piola

Hungarian György Sárosi played in all four of Hungary's games in the tournament and scored in all them (two in the First Round and one in the rest). Silvio Piola also played in all of Italy's matches, failed to score in the semi-final, but scored in all the other matches (once in the First Round, twice in the Quarterfinal and twice again in the Final). Gino Colaussi scored four for Italy over the three games he played in the tournament (once in the quarterfinal, once in the semi-final and twice in the Final). Pole Ernest Wilimowski also scored four (all four coming in the 6-5 First Round defeat at the hands of Brazil). Gyula Zsengellér of Hungary was the tournament's second highest scorer with 6 (twice in the First Round, once in the Quarterfinal and a hat-trick in the semi-final). Brazilian Leônidas topscored in the tournament with 7 (a hat-trick in the First Round, one in the Quarterfinal, one in the Quarterfinal replay and two in the third place playoff). Ernst Lörtscher failed to score for the right team in the tournament, only managing to score an own goal in the favour of Germany in Switzerland's First Round 4-2 victory of Germany.
5. How many matches were played at the Stade Gerland in Lyon?

Answer: None

Only one match was scheduled to be played there, the First Round match between Sweden and Austria, and that was cancelled as Austria withdrew when they had recently been annexed into Germany.
6. What was the approximate attendance of the Final?

Answer: 60, 000

This was easily the highest attendance of the tournament. Two matches had an approximate attendance of 6,000 (Cuba vs Romania in the First Round, and Sweden vs Cuba in the quarterfinal). One match had an unknown attendance (Czechoslovakia vs Netherlands in the First Round). One match had an approximate attendance of 5,000 (Cuba vs Romania in the First Round replay).
7. In Romania's First Round 3-3 draw with Cuba, who scored Romania's first goal?

Answer: Silviu Bindea

He bagged the first goal of the game in the 35th minute. Héctor Socorro scored two of Cuba's three goals, in the 44th and 103rd minutes. Stefan Dobay scored Romania's third goal in the 105th minute. Gheorghe Bucur was a modern day Romanian player.
8. Which two teams failed to score a goal in the tournament?

Answer: Dutch East Indies and Netherlands

The Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) were knocked out in the First Round 6-0 by Hungary. Netherlands were also knocked out in the First Round 3-0 by Czechoslovakia, although all three goals were scored in extra-time. Belgium were also knocked out in the First Round 3-1 by France. Henri Isemborghs scored their only goal of the tournament.
9. Who was Czechoslovakia's head coach in this tournament?

Answer: Josef Meissner

Josef Meissner led Czechoslovakia to the quarterfinals before succumbing to defeat against Brazil. Vittorio Pozzo was the head coach that led Italy to victory in this FIFA World Cup. Adhemar Pimenta was Brazil's head coach, and Karl Rappan was Switzerland's.
10. How many goals did Iuliu Baratky score in the tournament?

Answer: One

Romanian Iuliu Baratky netted just a single goal, the second of Romania's three in their 3-3 draw with Cuba.
