Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A hilarious incident occurred in the Sydney v St Kilda clash in Round 18, 1993, when a Swans fan, trying to put St Kilda star Tony 'Plugger' Lockett off his game, released a pig with the word 'Plugga' and the No. 4 painted on its side onto the SCG, causing commentator Sandy Roberts to quip, "there's a pig at full forward!" The pig was on the field for a couple of minutes before a Sydney player laid the perfect tackle to get it off the field. Who laid the tackle?

Answer: Darren Holmes

After the pig had evaded many 'opponents' successfully, Swan Darren Holmes laid a fantastic tackle on the pig to stop its weaving run. Unfortunately, this great tackle didn't seem to boost the Swan's confidence, as they ended up losing the match, at home, 118-155.
2. In the second qualifying final of 1994, extra time was needed for the first time in a final, as North Melbourne and Hawthorn were tied 91-91 at the end of the game. Hawthorn were scoreless after extra time. How many points did North score in the extra time period?

Answer: 23

North Melbourne held the Hawks scoreless in extra time, while scoring 3 goals 5 behinds themselves, to run out victors, 15.24.114, to Hawthorn 13.13.91.
3. The 1991 finals series certainly involved some big goal totals kicked by forwards. Which of these players didn't kick a bag of 8 or more goals in a game in this high-scoring finals series?

Answer: Danny Del-Re (Footscray)

Brownless and Lockett had a shootout between themselves in the Geelong-St Kilda second elimination final of 1991, with Brownless kicking 8 goals and Lockett 9 in Geelong's 104-97 win. Melbourne's Jakovich also kicked 8 goals in a 113-75 first elimination final win over Essendon. Footscray didn't even make the finals in 1991, making it impossible for Del-Re to have any sort of impact in the finals.

He did, however, kick 8 goals in Footscray's 1992 qualifying final, in a 61-point loss to Geelong, 111-172.
4. In Round 10, 1992, Essendon lost to Carlton by 52 points at Princes Park 64-116. What was unique about this game?

Answer: Essendon had more scoring shots

Essendon had actually had 3 more scoring shots than the Blues, losing with an incredibly inaccurate 7.22.64 to Carlton's 18.8.116. A total of 14 Essendon players kicked at least one behind, with Simon Madden the most accurate with 4 of their 7 goals.
5. I played 18 games for the Brisbane Bears in 1992, kicking 43 goals for the season. When Brisbane lost to Geelong by 164 points in Round 7 of that year, I kicked 8 of my team's 11 goals for the match. Who am I?

Answer: John Hutton

Despite Hutton kicking 8 goals for the match, and almost matching Geelong's Gary Ablett, who kicked 9, it wasn't a happy day for the Bears, who conceded a colossal 39 goals 17 behinds 239 points, while only kicking 11.9.75 themselves.
6. Where was 1980s and 90s Carlton stalwart Mil Hanna born?

Answer: Lebanon

Hanna was remembered as not only the first VFL/AFL player born in Lebanon, he was also remembered as an athletic, pacy wingman who played in a premiership side with Carlton.
7. The classic 1999 preliminary final between Carlton and Essendon, that Carlton won by a point, 104-103, will always be remembered as the game Essendon's Dean Wallis was brilliantly tackled by Carlton's Fraser Brown in the last thirty seconds as Essendon moved the ball forward. Who picked up the loose ball after Brown's dispossessing tackle to basically seal the match for Carlton?

Answer: Justin Murphy

Murphy picked up the ball after it had been jarred free and sent Carlton forwards to seal the match. This was considered a huge upset as Essendon had finished top of the ladder and were premiership favourites, whereas Carlton had finished 6th with 12 wins and 10 losses. Some Essendon fans never forgave Wallis after he was tackled in this game.
8. In 1996, three Sydney players polled 14 Brownlow votes. Which of these wasn't one of those players?

Answer: Daryn Cresswell

Lockett, Roos and Kelly all polled 14 votes in 1996 to lead Sydney in the Brownlow count. Cresswell, despite having a very solid season, was only given 3 votes that year, and was also one of Sydney's best in their Grand Final loss that year to North Melbourne.
9. Some seriously on-the-fringe Grand Final pre-game entertainment happened before the 1991 Grand Final between Hawthorn and West Coast, when singer-songwriter Angry Anderson was paraded around in a Batmobile, before belting out which of his songs?

Answer: Bound For Glory

Memorably priceless for the people witnessing it, this began a long trend of pretty awful Grand Final entertainment, but nothing will ever better this ridiculousness before the 1991 Grand Final.
10. In the Fremantle v St Kilda match of Round 15, 1999, field umpire Peter Carey showed his versatility by taking a mark in the middle of the ground, after the ball was kicked towards him (but not aimed at him) by a Fremantle player. What player kicked the ball that Carey marked?

Answer: Adrian Fletcher

Fremantle's Adrian Fletcher, at his fifth club, kicked a short pass into the centre of the ground, and umpire Carey took the mark on his chest instead of moving out of the way, much to the amusement of the players around him. This famous incident was treated with light-heartedness by almost everybody in the football world, and Toyota even use it for an ad once!
Freemantle won the match, at home, 107-84.
