Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which team finished the home and away season on top of the ladder?

Answer: Adelaide

Adelaide and West Coast played in the final round of the season, and the winner would finish top. Adelaide won by eight points but in the process, inspirational leader Mark Riccuito was reported and would miss the first finals game.
2. Which player won the 2005 Coleman Medal for leading goalscorer?

Answer: Fraser Gehrig

Gehrig missed the final game of the season with injury, but hung on to win the Coleman Medal with Barry Hall finishing two goals behind on 72 goals. Despite dominating the final game, "Big Bad" Barry handed off more goals than he kicked himself.
3. The beginning of the year saw major changes to which aspect of the Australian Football League?

Answer: The reporting process

The AFL introduced a system whereas every aspect of a reported offence is scored on a scale. The combined total of points earned would determine how many games, if any, a player would be suspended for. The first player to feel the wrath of the tribunal's new system was the Port Power's Byron Pickett.

Despite attempting to clear up the confusion of previous seasons, the tribunal continued to be criticised.
4. Which team took out the 2005 wooden spoon?

Answer: Carlton

Despite a late charge by Collingwood, Carlton claimed the wooden spoon by playing poorly week in and week out. The lower rungs of the AFL ladder were filled with many of the powerhouse teams of earlier years.
5. The umpires came under increasing criticism as the year went on. A number of coaches were critical of the men in white at post match press conferences, resulting in hefty fines. Which coach received the largest fine?

Answer: Grant Thomas

Grant Thomas was fined the most for his suggestion that umpires should store away their egos before beginning a career. The AFL insists coaches attend post match press conferences, however they may not make remarks or comments critical of the umpires or that show the game in a bad light.

Many of the coaches find this frustrating. Australian cricketer Jason Gillespie circumvented similar rules when he was asked on umpiring standards, saying "I can't comment on the umpires but a friend of mine said they were terrible."
6. Which Richmond player suffered a horrendous broken leg early in the season?

Answer: Nathan Brown

Caught by the camera, Nathan Brown's injury sickened many television viewers. As Melbourne player Matthew Whelan fell across the Tiger forward's leg, it snapped, leaving it protruding at a disturbing angle. After surgery to correct the break, Brown was given the thumbs up by the Richmond club to holiday in France for a few weeks.
7. AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou was highly critical of which team's playing style?

Answer: Sydney

Sydney began the year playing a very tight marking, low scoring style of play prompting Demetriou to remark that an unattractive stlye of football is being played that would result in Sydney losing more than they win. Sydney coach Paul Roos defended his tactics, claiming he coached to the strengths of his team. For the record, Sydney finished the season with 15 wins and seven losses.
8. Media reports linked which team's captain with shady members of organized crime?

Answer: West Coast

West Coast captain Ben Cousins and star ruckman Michael Gardiner were reported to have been questioned by West Australian police after a shooting in a city nightclub. Despite the controversy, Cousins went on to have an outstanding year leading his club to second on the AFL ladder.
9. Which St. Kilda star was targeted for rough treatment by the Brisbane side after hurting a shoulder?

Answer: Nick Riewoldt

Nick Riewoldt appeared to hurt his shoulder in the round one clash with Brisbane. Rather than go off, Riewoldt jogged back to his position prompting Lions players Mal Michael and Chris Scott to bump and bash into his shoulder repeatedly. The Brisbane Lions won the game convincingly, but in round 22, St. Kilda and Nick Riewoldt gained revenge by thrashing their rivals.
10. Which former player was added to the AFL Hall of Fame despite being implicated in the overdose death of a young woman?

Answer: Gary Ablett

After having been overlooked in 2004, Ablett, considered by many as the greatest player of all-time, was finally placed into the Hall of Fame. He failed to show up for the presentation due to receiving treatment for depression. Later in the year he was able to look on as his two sons played together for his old team Geelong.
