Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Several key Bills players missed all or much of the game due to injury. Who is the only player below who played the entire game?

Answer: Bruce Smith

Bennett and Kelly had been injured and sat out the entire game. Thurman Thomas had a hip pointer and only played in the first half, carrying 11 times for 26 yards.
2. How many times, and by what score(s), did the Bills lead the Oilers in the game?

Answer: Twice, 38-35 and 41-38

After Buffalo's first score, the Bills trailed 7-3. The Oilers quickly ran the score to 28-3 at halftime, then 35-3 early in the third period. The Bills came back with five unanswered touchdowns to go ahead 38-35. The Oilers forced overtime with a tying field goal before the Bills finally won the game.
3. How did the Oilers score their final touchdown before the Bills began their comeback?

Answer: Interception return

If trailing 28-3 at halftime wasn't bad enough, early in the second half, Bills quarterback Frank Reich threw an interception to Houston's Bubba McDowell. McDowell ran the ball back 58 yards for a touchdown, and the Oilers led 35-3 barely a minute and a half into the third period.
4. Who scored Buffalo's first touchdown in the game?

Answer: Kenneth Davis

Davis's one-yard run brought the Bills to within 35-10.
5. After the Bills scored their first touchdown, who recovered their onside kick?

Answer: Kicker Steve Christie

Christie recovered his own kick, giving the Bills the ball on their own 48. The Oilers had expected a regular kickoff and had only five players on their front receiving line.
6. Which Bills player scored three consecutive touchdowns in the game?

Answer: Andre Reed

Reed scored twice in two and a half minutes in the third-quarter, on plays of 26 and 18 yards; the second of these coming on a fourth-and-five. Reed's third touchdown, a 17-yarder with 3:08 to play, put the Bills on top, 38-35.
7. Who was the Oilers' quarterback in the game, who had one of his best days as a pro, including being 19 of 22 with four touchdowns in the first half?

Answer: Warren Moon

Moon, who amassed more than 70,000 passing yards in the NFL and the Canadian Football League, was outstanding, especially in the first half. But the two second-half interceptions he threw helped the Bills win the game. Buffalo pulled to within 35-31 on a touchdown set up by an interception return to the Houston 25, and their winning field goal in overtime came after he threw his second interception.
8. What did the officials miss that should have nullified one of the Bills' touchdowns that day?

Answer: The receiver was ineligible - he'd stepped out of bounds

Buffalo's Don Beebe scored their second touchdown that day, on a first-down play, after stepping out of bounds and returning to the field, making him ineligible, but none of the officials saw it. Ironically, the NFL had stopped allowing officials to review plays using instant replay that season, after six years of using it. Replay was not reinstated to NFL games until 1999.
9. How did the Bills get the ball in overtime to kick the winning field goal?

Answer: An interception

Nate Odome's interception of Warren Moon's third-down pass gave the Bills the ball. What really sealed the Oilers' fate was the 15-yard facemask penalty they incurred in bringing down Odomes. It gave the Bills the ball on the Oiler 20. Two plays later, Steve Christie's 32-yard kick on third down won the game for the Bills.
10. The game set a new NFL record for biggest comeback. Which existing playoff record did it tie?

Answer: Most total points by both teams

The 41-38 final score was identical to the score of the 1981 divisional playoff game between the San Diego Chargers and Miami Dolphins.
