1. Who was the starting pitcher for the American League?

Answer: David Wells

Wells was a three time All-Star, the 2000 All-Star Game being his final one. He also appeared in the 1995 and 1998 Mid-Summer Classic. Wells appeared in his final Major League game on September 28th, 2007 after a long career which began when he was drafted in the second round of the 1982 Amateur Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays.

He played for the Blue Jays, Yankees, Tigers, Padres and Red Sox throughout his illustrious time in the Majors.
2. Who was the home plate umpire for the game?

Answer: Mike Reilly

Reilly umpired many big games during his time in blue. He was behind the plate in the 2010 All-Star game, and he also worked the 1982 and 1993 All-Star games. Reilly was appointed to the World Series umpiring staff for the 1984, 1992, 2002, and 2007 contests. Reilly for a short amount of time was the most senior umpire in baseball, before he retired on February 23, 2011.
3. Who received the honor of being the starting catcher for the National League?

Answer: Jason Kendall

Mike Piazza was selected to start by the fans but was unfortunately not able to start because he was hit in the head with a Roger Clemens pitch earlier in the season and he elected to sit out the All-Star game in order to speed up his recovery. Jason Kendall, a three time career All-Star, was selected to catch in his place. Kendall also had appearances in the 1996 and 1998 All-Star Games, where he compiled a hit in two at-bats.
4. What third baseman for the American League was selected to play but declined?

Answer: Cal Ripken Jr.

Cal Ripken Jr holds the most consecutive games played at 2,632. He appeared in 16 consecutive All-Star games and had 15 starts in a row at shortstop. After the 1997 season and during the 1999 season went on the DL for the first time in his long career.

The next year when he was again elected to the All-Star team in 2000 he was again on the DL and not able to play for the American League. Ripken Later retired in 2001, a year after he collected the honor of making the Baseball All-Century team.
5. Who won the Home Run Derby?

Answer: Sammy Sosa

Sammy Sosa beat Ken Griffey Jr. in the head to head finals of the Home Run Derby. Sosa had a total of 26 home runs to win it all. Griffey Jr. hit a total of 11 in the competition, 15 behind the mark that Sosa put up. Carl Everett and Carlos Delgado were the two other semifinalists, Griffey Jr. beat Delgado by 2 homers. Sosa hit 11 in the semi-finals and beat out Carl Everett by 5.

In the final round Sosa out-slugged Griffey Jr. 9-2 to win the crown.
6. Who hit the only home run of the game?

Answer: Chipper Jones

Chipper Jones hit the homerun off James Baldwin who went on eventually to get the win for the American League. The homer came in the 3rd inning and the shot tied the game at 1-1. The national league would still go on to lose by the score of 6-3.
7. Who pitched the 4th inning for the National League?

Answer: Al Leiter

Leiter let up two runs in the fourth and was credited with the loss for the National League. Graves pitched the 2nd inning, Brown pitched the 3rd, and Wickman pitched the 8th.
8. Who was the manager for the American League?

Answer: Joe Torre

Torre was selected to be the manager because his Yankees reached the world series in the 1999 season. Torre managed the All-Star game 6 times in his career; 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2004. As manager Torre was given the right to pick the Starting Pitcher, he went on to pick David Wells.
9. In the 9th inning of the game, how many runs were scored by the American League?

Answer: 4

All-time MLB saves leader Trevor Hoffman went on in relief of Bob Wickman to try and shut down the American League to force extra innings. Matt Lawton, Maglio Ordonez, and Darin Erstad provided the runs for the American League.
10. Who threw out the first pitch?

Answer: Hank Aaron

Aaron threw the first pitch to catcher Jason Kendall. Aaron played with the Braves for part of his career (he retired in 1976) and was welcomed by his former fans as he walked to the mound to throw out the first pitch. As a former Major League All-Star, the pitch was an emotional and ceremonial first pitch.
