Crosby was most likely the most hyped prospect to come along since Eric Lindros. Crosbymania grew even more when Wayne Gretzky said that Crosby would be the one to break his NHL records. The Pittsburgh Penguins were lucky enough to win the draft lottery and the right to pick Crosby.

Ryan, who was born Bobby Stevenson, was one of the most highly-touted Americans to come along in a few years. The right winger was picked second overall by Brian Burke and the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

Johnson, already considered one of the best defensemen in U.S. college hockey in his freshman year, was a punishing hitter who contributed offensively as well. He made headlines during the 2006 World Junior Championship after delivering a cheap shot on Canada's Steve Downie. Johnson was selected third overall by the Carolina Hurricanes.

Pouliot, who was expected to go as high as second overall, slipped to number 4, where the Minnesota Wild gladly snatched him up. A late bloomer, the centre enjoyed a breakout season with the OHL's Sudbury Wolves in 2004-05.

Brule, who at one point during the season was being compared to Crosby, saw his stock drop due to injury and was picked 6th by the Columbus Blue Jackets. The centre began the year in Columbus but suffered a serious injury and was sent back to junior.

Skille was part of a core of young American talent that had taken the scouting world by storm. The skilled right winger played a crucial role for Team USA in the 2006 World Juniors and was picked 7th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks.

Setoguchi's selection at 8th overall by the San Jose Sharks came as a shock to many observers. The right winger from the Western Hockey League was expected to go somewhere around 20th. Setoguchi just missed the cut for Canada's World Junior team.
