5. Buffalo Sabres had the first overall pick in the 1987 draft and chose _________________ . He was later traded to New York Islanders for Pat Lafontaine.

Answer: Pierre Turgeon

For such a great player he sure moved around alot (Buffalo, Islanders, Montreal, St. Louis and Dallas).
6. In 1989, the Quebec Nordiques made __________________ the first ever European to be picked first overall.

Answer: Mats Sundin

Mats didn't last long in Quebec and was traded to Toronto for Wendel Clark.
7. Brendan Shanahan scored his five hundredth NHL goal in the 2001-2002 season while playing for the Detroit Red Wings. Which team made him the second overall pick in 1987?

Although he had some great years in St. Louis, it was New Jersey where he got his start in 1987. His only affiliation to Toronto is his brother played lacrosse for the Toronto Rock.
8. In the 2001-2002 season Andrew Cassels was playing for the Vancouver Canucks, but which eastern Canadian NHL team picked him in the first round of 1987 draft?

Answer: Montreal Canadiens

Okay this one was a gimmie, but I wanted to make sure your still with me. Edmonton is not in the east, Ottawa didn't have a team in 1987 and the Tiger Cats play a different sport.
9. In 1986 Brian Leetch was the first round pick of the _________________ . He went on to win the Calder Trophy as NHL Rookie of the year.

Answer: New York Rangers

He was drafted out of High School and beat out Vancouver Canucks Trevor Linden for Rookie of the year.
10. In 1983, future stars Steve Yzerman and Pat Lafontaine went third and fourth in the draft. Who went first and became the first American born player to be picked first overall?

Answer: Brian Lawton

It is ironic because Lafontaine is American and would have been a much better pick. But then the question wouldn't be as good with Lafontaine as the answer.
