Iván Gutiérrez led the stage for a large portion of the race until the race favorites started. Soon Sebastien Rosseler had the lead, only three riders would have a better time than he did. Those riders were Cadel Evans, Alejandro Valverde, and Alberto Contador. By winning the stage Cadel took the overall lead.

He also took the lead in the King of the Mountains Classification and Points Classification. Cadel rode for Silence-Lotto.
2. Stage 2 had a breakaway start right at kilometer 0. How many riders were in this breakaway?

Answer: 5 riders

Stéphane Augé, Alexandre Pichot, Paul Voss, Iñaki Isasi, and Hector Gonzalez Baeza made up the five-man break. With 7km to go the breakaway had shrunk to two riders. The break was caught with 6km to go. The peloton would set up for a sprint finish. Angelo Furlan beat out Tom Boonen to win the stage. Angelo rode for Lampre N.G.C.

Niki Terpstra won the stage. Niki was a part of a five-man breakaway that started 33km into the stage. The breakaway would survive the raging peloton. After the five riders crossed the line the peloton made it's way over the line about a minute and a half after the breakaway did. By winning the stage Niki took the overall lead in the 2009 Dauphine Libere.

Sylwester Szmydwon and Alejandro started a breakaway while going up Mont Ventoux. Sylwester was the first to cross the finish line, thus winning the stage. Sylwester rode for Liquigas.

Answer: Jurgen Van de Walle

There was a 14-man breakaway that started 17km in to the stage; it contained Jurgen Van de Walle. Côte de Châteauroux-les-Alpes was the first classified mountain of Stage 6; it was a category 4 mountain. There were two more mountains to climb after Côte de Châteauroux-les-Alpes.

The breakaway would survive the peloton. Pierrick Fédrigo would go on to win the stage, out sprinting Jurgen Van De Walle for the win. Pierrick rode for Bbox Bouygues Telecom.

Many breakaways occurred throughout the stage, but only one would survive. That breakaway was made up of one rider, David Monocutié. While climbing up the final mountain of the day many riders started breakaways in an attempt to bring him back. Their attempts would fail, as David would cruise to the stage victory. David rode for Cofidis.

Answer: Yes

The breakaway was formed just 10km into the stage, as the stage went on the number of riders in the breakaway shrank down to two. Stef Clement and Timothy Duggan were the two riders who were out for the whole stage. With about 2km to go in the stage Sébastien Joly joined them. Stef Clement out sprinted the other two riders for the stage win.

The peloton would cross the line about two minutes after the breakaway did. Stef rode for Rabobank.

Answer: Alejandro Valverde

Alejandro gained the overall lead after Stage 5. He would hold on to the lead for the rest of the 2009 Criterium du Dauphine Libere. This was Alejandro's second consecutive Dauphine Libere victory. Alejandro rode for Caisse d'Epargne.
