1. Which rider won the first Tour de France race?

Answer: Maurice Garin

Garin won the 1903 tour, and was the first of many Frenchmen to do so.
2. Who was the first non-Frenchman to win the race?

Answer: Francois Faber

Faber won the tour in 1909 and was from Luxembourg. Lambot won it 1919 & 1922 and was Belgian. Frantz won in the race in 1927 & 1928 and was from Luxembourg, and Pelissier won in 1923 and was French.
3. Who was the first Italian to win the tour?

Answer: O.Bottecchia

Bottecchia won the tour twice in 1924 and 1925.
4. Who became the first rider to win the tour three times, when he won it in 1913, 1914 & 1920?

Answer: Philippe Thys

Thys' achievement was remarkable due to the fact his second ad third titles were seperated by the Great War. Leducq won it in 1930 & 1932, whilst Lapebie won in 1937 and Maes in 1935.

Yes four men achieved the historical feat, the first being J. Anquetil who won it in 1957,61,62,63 & 64. Next came arguably the greatest rider ever in Eddy Merckx who won it in 69,70,71,72 & 74. Next was Frenchman B. Hinault who did it in 78,79,81,82 & 85 and finally Miguel Indurain of Spain who won it in 91,92,93,94 & 95. Armstrong landed his honours in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003.

The French have produced 20 champions since the second world war, to the end of the 20th century. However, of the 20 titles 10 were won 5 times each by Anquetil and Hinault. The Belgians have had 6 winners of which Merckx won 5, the Italians have won it 8 times and the Spanish also 8 times.

Answer: yes

The brilliant Bjarne Riis did it in 1996 with a magnificent performance.
10. What year was the last year that a Frenchman won the Tour in the 20th century?

Answer: 1985

1985 and the last of his five titles for Hinault, was the last time a 'home' rider pulled on the yellow jersey in the 20th century.
