Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 2012 edition of the Daytona 500, marked the first time in history that the race was run at night. What was the reason for this occurrence?

Answer: Constant rain on Sunday afternoon forced the race to be postponed

The 2012 Daytona 500 was scheduled to be run on Sunday February 26, 2012. After large amounts of rain hit the Daytona International Speedway area on Sunday the race was moved to Monday afternoon. On Monday, more rain pushed the start of the race back even further to shortly after 7 pm.
2. Which pair of drivers started on the front row for the 2012 Daytona 500?

Answer: Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle

Rousch-Fenway Racing teammates Edwards and Biffle won the front row through the traditional Daytona qualifying situation. Despite starting on the pole position, Edwards failed to lead an entire lap in the race.
3. What were the car numbers of the winner of each of the two races that make up the Gatorade Duels?

Answer: 17 and 14

Tony Stewart won Duel One and Matt Kenseth won Duel Two. The Gatorade Duel at Daytona is a pair of 150 mile qualifying races, held after qualifying and officially set positions 3-43 for the Daytona 500.
4. What was the name of the driver who hit a trailer-mounted track jet-dryer?

Answer: Juan Pablo Montoya

Already under caution, Montoya came off of pit road and was getting up to speed to catch up with the rest of the field for the restart, when a trailing arm broke and he slammed into a jet engine on the back of a jet dryer, causing the jet engine to begin leaking kerosene onto the racing surface.

A few seconds later after another car drove over the leaking fuel, the fuel ignited causing a massive fire, which red-flagged the race for over two hours.
5. How many foreign born drivers (born outside of the USA), started this race?

Answer: 2

Juan Montoya who drove the number 42 Chevrolet, was born in Bogota, Colombia. Marcos Ambrose was born in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. Ambrose outperformed Montoya by finishing 13th in the race, while Montoa finished 35th after crashing on lap 160.
6. What was the reason for the first caution?

Answer: A five car crash, which included Jimmie Johnson and Danica Patrick

On lap two, a crash occurred involving the #21 car of Trevor Bayne, the #33 of Elliott Sadler, and the #51 of Kurt Busch, as well as Danica Patrick and Jimmie Johnson. Danica Patrick trying to get experience in what was her first Daytona 500, was able to return to the track several laps down and came home in 38th place. Jimmie Johnson couldn't return to the track and finished in 42nd place scoring only two points for the race.
7. Which driver led the most laps in the race?

Answer: Denny Hamlin

Despite starting deep in the field in 31st place, Hamlin worked his way to the front and stayed there longer than anyone else leading 57 of the 202 laps in the race, before eventually finishing 22nd. The race winner led 50 laps, and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Who finished third led 44 laps, meaning that three of the top four finishers led for 151 of the 202 laps that were run that night.
8. The Daytona 500 is the first race each season in which drivers score Championship points. Which driver entered the 2012 Daytona 500 as the defending Sprint Cup Series Champion?

Answer: Tony Stewart

Tony Stewart won his third Championship in November of 2011. The 2012 Daytona 500 was the first race in which Stewart was the Defending Champion of the Sprint Cup Series. Stewart started third after winning a Gatorade Duel race, and after a late race wreck was relegated to a 16th place finish.
9. The race began around 7:00 pm on February 27, 2012. Did the race end on the same day that it began?

Answer: No

Despite a curfew in the city, the race was allowed to continue until there was a winner. At close to 1:00 am on Tuesday 28th February, the race finally ended after a distance of 202 laps or 505 miles.
10. After all the excitement and a day and a half of rain, which driver crossed the finish line first to win the 2012 Daytona 500?

Answer: Matt Kenseth

The win was the 22nd of Kenseth's career. It was the second time he won the "Daytona 500", having also won the race in 2009.
