Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 134th final of the FA Cup was played between Arsenal FC and Aston Villa FC. How many times previously had the two sides met in the final?

Answer: Never

Despite both clubs playing in a combined 28 finals between them, they never played against each other. The finals referred to in the other three alternate answers were:
1912 1-0 Barnsley v WBA
1930 2-0 Arsenal v Huddersfield Town
1946 4-1 Derby County v Charlton Athletic
1964 3-2 West Ham United beat Preston North End
1973 1-0 Sunderland v Leeds United
1988 1-0 Wimbledon v Liverpool.
2. The 2015 FA Cup Final was played in glorious sunshine and the atmosphere was electric. Aston Villa, it seemed, had an advantage by being the designated 'home side' allowing them to wear their traditional claret and blue shirts, but what were the colours of their opponents on the occasion?

Answer: Yellow with blue sleeves

Arsenal had to wear their away colours of yellow and blue. In their previous four finals wearing this combination the Gunners had lost, this was a bad omen for their fans. Traditionally Arsenal play in red shirts with white sleeves as their 'home' colours.
3. The 2015 final began at quite a pace and it was Arsenal who settled fastest with some slick passing and a number of chances created. It was only the hard work of Aston Villa keeper Shay Given that prevented any goals being scored early on. What was significant about Given's second appearance in the FA cup final?

Answer: It was the longest period of time between two finals for a player

Shay Given was part of four FA cup campaigns in which he played in two. His first appearance came in 1998, ironically against Arsenal where he was on the losing side playing for Newcastle United after goals from Marc Overmars and Nicolas Anelka gave the Gunners the League and Cup double 2-0.
A year later Given was replaced by Steve Harper in the Newcastle goal (they lost 2-0 to the triple winning Manchester United 2-0).
In 2011 Given was part of the Manchester City squad that beat Stoke City 1-0. Given picked up a winners medal as an unused substitute.
In 2015 he faced Arsenal 17 years after the 1998 final, a record gap between a 'playing' period of time.
4. The final was played at a pace in which Aston Villa struggled. Arsenal out-smarted them in every department. It was however, a matter of time before the first goal was scored. Which Arsenal player open the scoring at the forty minute mark with a well executed half volley from ten yards out?

Answer: Theo Walcott

Arsenal had complete control of the first half and had had a plethora of good chances to score. Walcott had two excellent chances to open the scoring as did Koscielny who forced Villa keeper Given into a top class save, Ramsey also had a couple of decent opportunities. The opening goal was set up by Walcott, whose ball to Monreal created the initial cross into the penalty area which was headed back across the goal by Sanchez.

Despite Alan Hutton's last gasp leap towards the ball, Walcott was on hand to smash the ball into the goal to send the Arsenal fans behind the goal into a state of delirium.
5. The half time whistle was blown and Aston Villa were relieved. The Football Association chose which referee, a surprise choice to some?

Answer: Jon Moss

Moss was given the top honour in the face of some disquiet from former referees who felt he was unsuited for a game of this magnitude. It was proven however, that Moss was in fact very capable of arbitrating this game and officiated superbly.
His assistants were Darren England and Simon Bennett.
Fourth official: Craig Pawson
Reserve official: Harry Lennard
6. The second half started with Arsenal leading 1-0. Aston Villa were left reeling five minutes after the break when Arsenal scored arguably one of the finest cup final goals of all time. Which Arsenal player unleashed a sensational 30 yard strike past the flailing Shay Given?

Answer: Alexis Sanchez

The second half was much like the first with Arsenal in complete control. If Aston Villa were going to get a foothold in the game, they needed to start fast, however, Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez collected the ball some 30 yards from goal before sending a swerving effort that would have had any goalkeeper flapping at fresh air, as the ball clipped the underside of the crossbar and nestled into the net. Once more Arsenal fans went into a state of frenzy.
7. Aston Villa were stunned after Arsenal scored their second five minutes after the break. Villa's had to respond in order to have any chance of an unlikely Villa comeback. On the hour, however, Arsenal scored their third with a headed goal. Which player scored?

Answer: Per Mertesacker

After the first hour Aston Villa had all but given up. When a corner was floated into the penalty area Christian Benteke, who was marking the big German centre half Per Mertesacker, lost his man. The German managed to direct his header into the bottom left hand corner of the goal. Three - nil. It was pretty much game over.
8. The game became, at times akin to a practice match as Arsenal kept Aston Villa at bay. In fact. the Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczęsny never made a single save in the entire match. With time ticking away in injury time, Arsenal broke forward to score a fourth in the 93rd minute. Which hard working forward scored, making this match a comprehensive victory for Arsenal?

Answer: Olivier Giroud

Some decent wing play by Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain led to the latter whipping in a superb cross, which Giroud managed to direct past the hapless Villa keeper Given. Giroud ended the season at Arsenal with a good tally of goals (19 in 36 matches) despite missing half the season due to injury. He had scored twice in a previous round against Middlesbrough (Round 5).
9. Ironically the Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had equalled the record of Aston Villa manager George Ramsey who, over 100 years previously, won the FA Cup how many times?

Answer: 6
