Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 2015 Tour de France, the Grand Depart began with an individual time trial in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Which young rider surprised the field, taking the stage win and becoming the first yellow jersey winner of the Tour?

Answer: Rohan Dennis, BMC Racing Team

Dennis' finish time of 14:56:11 for the 13.8 km (8.6 mile) course set a high bench mark for the three time trial favorites - Tony Martin, Fabian Cancellara and Tom Dumoulin. The Australian's time was the fastest individual time trial at a Tour de France. Martin came in second, 5 seconds behind, followed by Cancellara, 6 seconds back and Demoulin 8 seconds back.
2. During Stage 2 of the 2015 Tour, a 103 mile trip from Utrecht to Zeeland, cyclists endured cold gusting crosswinds and wet conditions which ultimately split the peloton into an elite group in front and a chase group trying to cross the gap. Which two "big guns" were caught off guard and missed the break?

Answer: Quintana and Nibali

Nairo Quintana and Vincenzo Nibali lost 1 minute and 28 second when they missed the split, a time deficit that put them at a serious disadvantage on day two of the race.
3. Which cyclist won the yellow jersey on Bastille Day 2015, France's national holiday?

Answer: Chris Froome, Team Sky

Froome, with Team Sky, launched a bold breakaway on Stage 10 of the Tour which fell on Bastille Day. Team Sky drove hard uphill to gain time on their rivals on the first day in the high mountains. Froome and wingman Richie Porte's brilliant acceleration secured their summit finish of La Pierre-Saint-Martin in first and second place, stretching Froome's overall time to a solid 2 minutes and 52 seconds over the nearest challenger. Teammate Geraint Thomas came across in fifth place. All in all a good day for Froome and Sky - their blistering attack strengthened Froome's grip on the yellow jersey. Tony Gallopin, the French rider who had hoped to win on Bastille Day, crossed the line in ninth place.
4. Which top podium contender, the winner of the 2014's only individual time trial, had to abandon the race because of a crash in the last kilometers of Stage 6 while wearing the leader's yellow jersey?

Answer: Tony Martin, Etixx-Quick-Step

Despite having broken his collarbone in a hard crash, Martin finished the race, assisted by his teammates, to "show proper respect for the yellow jersey." After crossing the line he kept his yellow jersey, but his Tour was ended. He was airlifted to Hamburg, Germany for surgery. Etixx-Quick-Step teammate, Zdenek Stybar, won the stage.
5. Stage 14 of the 2015 Tour de France took place on Nelson Mandela Day. Which rider with African team MTN-Qhubeka won the stage?

Answer: Steven Cummings

It was fitting that a South African team rider won on Nelson Mandela Day. Participating in their first Tour de France, Team MTN-Qhubeka had the distinction of being the first African-registered team in Tour history. Cummings' teammate, Daniel Teklehaimanot of Eritrea, had won the king of the mountains jersey - the first black African to wear the Tour's polka-dot jersey - on Stage 6.
6. Which 2015 Tour cyclist was broadsided in Stage 16 by French cyclist Warren Barguil, while rounding a curve on the treacherous descent of the Col de Manse, then flung into a telephone pole before landing over the roadside cliff?

Answer: Gertaint Thomas, Team Sky

It was a scene not to be believed as the Welsh Warrior, a key support rider for Chris Froome, was pulled back onto the road by cycling fans, remounted his bike and caught up with the peloton by the end of the descent. When asked about the horrific looking crash, Thomas said he was fine, but regretted the loss of his favorite sunglasses which are no longer being manufactured.

He was taken to hospital to be checked out after the race. At the time of the crash Thomas was in 5th place overall, but with time lost he finished 15th overall in Paris, 12 seconds behind Barguil.
7. Which rider in the 2015 Tour de France was accused of unsportsmanlike behavior for attacking near the end of the climb to the summit of the Col de la Croix de Fer while the yellow jersey leader was fixing his bike removing a stone lodged in his rear wheel?

Answer: Vincenzo Nibali, Astana Pro Team

The Tour's unwritten "gentleman's agreement" that the rider wearing yellow is not to be attacked while experiencing "a mechanical", was disregarded by Nibali. He did manage to take time off the Tour leader when he was not in a position to respond. Fair or foul depends on one's point of view about traditional Tour etiquette. Nibali's later claimed that he hadn't noticed Froome's problem. Elite cyclists believe a rider should not take advantage of another rider's misfortune - believing it invites bad luck. Nibali's attack immediately after Froome dismounted did give him the stage win, but it did not close the time gap between them - Nibali was still 6 minutes and 44 seconds behind his rival and Froome retained the yellow jersey.
8. In 2015, after a win on Stage 19, which rider fell victim to a flat tire at the base of the climb to the iconic Alpe d'Huez, the finish line for Stage 20 of the Tour, and the last chance to close time gaps before Paris?

Answer: Vincenzo Nibali, Astana Pro Team

Nibali found himself with a mechanical of his own the day after his attack on the yellow jersey. As fate would have it, Nibali's "mechanical" also involved his rear tire, a puncture at the worst possible moment, the bottom of the climb, 14 km to the finish.

The flat tire effectively took Nibali out of podium contention. He finished the stage in 15th place. At the Tour's end in Paris, last year's winner was 8 minutes and 36 seconds behind Froome.
9. Which cycling team came home first in the team classification in Paris in 2015?

Answer: Movistar Team (Spain)

Not only did Movistar take the top spot, two of their riders finished on the podium - Nairo Quintana and Alejandro Valverde, who finished second and third respectively. The 24-year-old Quintana also won the white jersey for best young rider and came in second in the king of the mountains points competition.
10. Which cyclist, favored to defend a previous win, won the 2015 Tour de France?

Answer: Chris Froome, Team Sky

Chris Froome's time for the 3,360 kilometer (2,087.81 mile) 2015 Tour de France was 84:46:14. He won 450,000 euros (approximately US$495,000). Nairo Quintana of Movistar came in second, 1 minute and 12 seconds behind. He received 200,000 euros ($220,000). In third place was Movistar's Alejandro Valverde, 5 minutes and 25 seconds behind. Valverde received 100,000 euros ($110,000).
