Answer: Roger Maris

The Babe hit his magic 60th in 1927. This record in all baseball stood until 1961, when Roger Maris hit 61 in a 162 game season. Maris hit a career 275 home runs, compared to Ruth's 714.
2. Which of these led the team with the highest season batting average?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Both Terry and Ott were Giants. Ruth set the team record in 1923 by hitting .393 with 205 hits, his career high. Ruth's .393 was only good enough for the league's second place spot. Harry Heilmann of the Tigers batted .403 in the season, winning the batting crown.
3. Which Yankee pitcher set a team record for most wins in a season?

Answer: Jack Chesbro

Chesbro was the only Yankee listed. In 1904, Chesbro set a Major League record for the 20th century by winning 41 games against 12 losses. He played for 11 seasons, and won 198 games.
4. Of the following, who hit more doubles in their career as a Yankee?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

From 1923-1939, the 'Iron Horse' hit 534 doubles in the pinstripes. His season high was 52 in 1927. Don Mattingly surpassed that in 1986 by smacking 53.
5. How many times in the century, did the Yankees skunk (four games to none) their opposition in a World Series?

Answer: Eight

Eight times the Yankees sent a team home embarrassed. This included blanking the Chicago Cubs twice. In all their World Series in the 20th century, the Yankees were skunked three times by their opponent. In 1922, the Giants skunked them 4-0-1, the 1963 Dodgers, and the 1976 Cincinnati Reds.
6. Who was the first Yankee pitcher to save 40 games in a season?

Answer: Dave Righetti

Perranoski and Marshall were never Yankees. Righetti spent 11 of his 16 seasons as a Yankee. After winning the American League Rookie of the Year in 1981, he won the Rolaids Relief Award for his 46 saves in 1986. He also won the award the following season. The first Yankee to save 50 was Mariano Rivera, who saved 50 in 2001.
7. How many Yankees stole 100 bases in a season during the century?

Answer: 0

The closest Yankee to the theft milestone was Rickey Henderson, whole stole 93 in 1988. As a Yankee, Henderson stole 326 of his 1406 career stolen bases. When Henderson retired in 2003, he was almost 500 career bases ahead of the next speedster, Lou Brock.
8. Which of these managers won the most games with the Yankees in the century?

Answer: Casey Stengel

Both McGraw and Durocher made their name with the New York Giants, and never managed the Yankees. Although Huggins and Stengel both managed the Bronx Bombers for 12 seasons, Casey won 82 more games, with a total of 1149 wins. Huggins took he team to six World Series winning three, while Stengel took them to 10, winning seven.
9. Which bruised player set a team record, by being hit by a pitch (HBP) 24 times in 1985?

Answer: Don Baylor

The others listed were Boston Red Sox players in 1985. Baylor led the American League eight times in being hit by a pitch (HBP). When he retired in 1988, he had been hit 267 times, the most in the century in either league.
10. In which year did the Yankee franchise go to their first World Series?

Answer: 1921

The Yankees tasted their first World Series in 1921, but lost to the New York Giants. They tried their luck in 1922, but had the same results. In 1923, their third consecutive promised land invitation, they finally won it all with revenge. They defeated the same Giants, four games to two.
