Answer: Olympiastadion

The Olympiastadion in Munich was the venue for England's triumph over Germany. The ground was home to Bayern Munich and 1860 Munich. The attendance for the game was 63,000. Bokelberg was home to Borussia Moenchengladbach, the Westfalenstadion was Borussia Dortmund's home, and Werder Bremen played at the Weserstadion.
2. Who refereed the game?

Answer: Pierluigi Collina

An Italian, Collina was widely regarded as the best referee in the world and handled the game in a superb fashion, with the play flowing smoothly. Frisk was a Swedish referee, Nielsen was a Danish referee, and Dallas was a Scottish referee. All were UEFA licensed, and all had refereed games in the World Cup.
3. Which of the following started the game in central midfield alongside Steven Gerrard for England?

Answer: Paul Scholes

England's team that day was: David Seaman, Gary Neville, Ashley Cole, Sol Campbell, Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard, Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Nick Barmby, Emile Heskey, and Michael Owen. Substitutes used were Owen Hargreaves, Jamie Carragher, and Steve McManaman. Scholes played in 65 games for England, and scored 14 goals.
4. Which player scored the first goal of the game?

Answer: Carsten Jancker

Jancker put the Germans in the lead as early as the sixth minute. Beginning his career in 1995 with Rapid Vienna, Jancker also played for Bayern Munich, Udinese, and Kaiserslautern. Deisler started out his career with Borussia Moenchengladbach, before going on to Hertha Berlin then Bayern Munich. Hamann's first club was Bayern Munich in 1996, then Newcastle United and Liverpool followed later. Ballack began his career with Leverkusen in 1998, before signing with Bayern Munich.
5. Which of the following scored England's first goal of the game?

Answer: Michael Owen

Owen scored an hat-trick as England hammered the Germans. His goals came in the 13th, 48th, and 66th minutes. Gerrard scored in the 45th minute to give England a 2-1 lead, and Heskey rounded up the 5-1 scoreline in the 74th.
6. Which England player was playing in his home stadium?

Answer: Owen Hargreaves

Hargreaves, although Canadian born and playing in Germany, came on as a substitute to win his second England cap. Hargreaves could have played international football for England, Wales, Canada and Germany.
7. The last time England won in Germany prior to this 2001 meeting was in which year?

Answer: 1965

England beat West Germany 1-0 at the Frankenstadion in Nuremburg on 12th May, 1965. Terry Paine was the goalscorer for England. Paine lined up alongside such players as Gordon Banks, Bobby Moore, George Cohen, and Jack Charlton.
8. In the England vs Germany 2002 World Cup qualifier, the game was tied at halftime.

Answer: False

Steven Gerrard made sure England went into the half-time dressing room in the lead with a brilliantly struck shot from around 30 yards out, that gave Oliver Kahn no chance right on the stroke of half-time, and England led, 2-1.
9. In their 18-man squad for the game, Germany had how many Premiership players at that time?

Answer: Two

Dietmar Hamann made the starting line-up for Germany, and played for Liverpool at the time. Christian Ziege was playing for Tottenham Hotspur at the time of the game, but was an unused substitute. England's team consisted of just Owen Hargreaves and Steve McManaman that weren't playing football in England. Hargreaves was a Bayern Munich player, while McManaman was in Spain with Real Madrid.
10. England went on to become group winners of their qualifying group.

Answer: True

Both England and Germany ended the qualifying campaign on 17 points, but it was England's superior goal difference that was the key factor. 'The Boot of God', or David Beckham's injury time free kick that hit the back of the net against Greece gave England the title of group winners, while Germany were forced into a playoff with Ukraine, which they won 5-1 on aggregate.
