West Ham finished the season at the bottom of the Premier League.

While Torres' output at Chelsea was disappointing, scoring just 45 goals in 172 appearances, Torres was on the pitch for arguably the two most iconic moments in Chelsea's history. He scored the goal that sealed Chelsea's place in the 2012 Champions League final and was on the pitch as Chelsea defeated Bayern Munich to become European champions for the first time. He left Chelsea in 2015.

Gomes was so impressed by Silva's quality that he also referred to the centre back as one of Brazil's best ever defenders too. Cristiano Ronaldo has compared Silva to Franz Beckenbauer, while former PSG player Alain Roche referred to Silva as "the Messi of defenders".

Silva has been a beacon of consistency for PSG during his tenure and was named to the Ligue 1 Team of the Year in all of his first seven seasons in Paris. While the Parisians have struggled to make an impact in European football in the 2010s, Silva's era at the Parc des Princes has coincided with PSG's domination of the French domestic scene.

Gary Lineker was the previous record holder, scoring 42 times for Barcelona between 1986 and 1989. Bale broke this record on 20 March 2016 in a 4-0 victory over Sevilla.

While Bale has been a divisive figure in the Spanish capital, he has scored some vital goals in key moments, scoring the winner in Madrid's 2-1 victory over Barcelona in the 2014 Copa del Rey final and netting twice in the club's 2018 Champions League final victory over Liverpool.

Suarez was unstoppable in the 2015-16 season, scoring 40 league goals to win the Pichichi Trophy for La Liga's top scorer alongside his European Golden Shoe award. He was the first player outside of the Messi/Ronaldo duopoly to win both awards since 2009, when Forlan won both awards. (Suarez shared the 2014 European Golden Shoe with Ronaldo but Suarez was the first player to win it outright outside of Messi and Ronaldo since Forlan in 2009). Totti won the award in 2007 and Henry won in 2004, sharing the award with Forlan in 2005.

Suarez' arrival at the Nou Camp was a huge success for both the club and the player. His good behaviour in Spain kept him on the pitch, allowing him to contribute to four La Liga titles in his first five seasons at the club. He also won the 2015 Champions League with the Blaugrana.

De Bruyne was the winner of the inaugural Premier League Playmaker of the Season, an award given to the player who provides the most assists over the course of the Premier League season. He had 16 assists in total, pipping his Manchester City teammate Leroy Sane to the award by a single assist. (To demonstrate City's dominance even further, they had the top four assist makers in the league, with David Silva and Raheem Sterling both providing 11).

De Bruyne was an easy choice for the PFA Team of the Year, and was one of five City players to be selected. (The others were Nicolas Otamendi, Kyle Walker, David Silva and Sergio Aguero). He was named City's Player of the Season for a second time, having also achieved this in his first year at the Etihad Stadium in 2015-16.

While De Bruyne did play the entirety of City's 3-0 victory over Arsenal in the 2018 EFL Cup final, the man of the match award went to captain Vincent Kompany.

Pogba's move to United was the biggest transfer saga of the 2016 summer window, with much media interest due to the possibility of a world-record fee and focus on Pogba's past at Old Trafford, having previously left United in 2012 after playing just three games. (He moved to Juventus on a free transfer as he didn't renew his contract). Pogba's time back in England has been hampered by a lack of consistency, clashes with former manager Jose Mourinho and a perception that Pogba's work rate was sub-standard. Real Madrid offered playmaker Rodriguez plus cash for Pogba. However, United said that the offer fell way below their valuation of the World Cup winner.

Despite these problems Pogba has plenty of moments to remember in the red shirt. He scored the opening goal in United's 2-0 win over Ajax in the 2017 Europa League final, sealing the club its first European trophy in nearly a decade. It was also Pogba's inspired second half in April 2018 in a fixture against Manchester City that stopped City from lifting the Premier League trophy in front of the United fans and players.

The controversy occurred during the 2019 Coupe de France final between PSG and Rennes. Neymar's goal helped to give PSG an early 2-0 lead, but an unexpected comeback from the underdogs saw the game go to penalties after a 2-2 draw, with Rennes winning 6-5 on spot kicks. After the match, Neymar was caught on video punching a Rennes fan who was insulting him. While PSG said they supported Neymar, manager Thomas Tuchel said "If we lose, we must show respect. You can't come into conflict with a spectator."

Neymar scored plenty of goals in Paris, helping to confirm PSG as France's best team. However, The Brazilian failed to settle in the French capital. While Neymar left Barcelona to escape Lionel Messi's shadow, Neymar's first two years in Paris has led to a growing belief in the French capital that French prodigy Kylian Mbappe has stolen the spotlight from the Brazilian in Paris.

Coutinho's Barcelona career started off well, finishing the 2017-18 season with 22 goals and 14 assists in 42 games for Liverpool and Barcelona. In 2019, Bayern took Coutinho on a season-long loan, with the option to buy him permanently in 2020. Coutinho scored 21 goals in 76 games for the Blaugrana before his loan move.

Felix's huge transfer fee was bigger than the numbers paid for more established players such as Antoine Griezmann, Eden Hazard and Matthijs de Ligt, showing how much Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone rated the young playmaker. Felix made his Benfica debut in August 2018, and the arrival of Bruno Lage at Benfica saw Felix's minutes greatly improve, as did his stock.

In April 2019, Felix scored a hat-trick in a 4-2 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League, becoming the youngest player (19 years and 152 days) to score a hat-trick in the competition. He ended the 2018-19 season second amongst teenagers for goals and assists behind Kai Havertz and Jadon Sancho respectively in Europe's top leagues.
