Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which trophy is awarded annually to the NHL's top goaltender?

Answer: Vezina Trophy

It is named after Georges Vezina, a legendary Montreal Canadiens goalie from 1910 to 1925. He died at age 39 of tuberculosis. The Art Ross trophy is awarded to the leading scorer, the Conn Smythe Award goes the the playoff MVP, and the Jack Adams award goes to the coach of the year.
2. What Hall of Famer was the first to wear a goalie mask?

Answer: Jacques Plante

Plante answered critics who chided him as being a sissy by winning numerous Vezina Trophies and Stanley Cups.
3. What goalie set an NHL record by starting 502 consecutive games?

Answer: Glenn Hall

Glenn Hall replaced Hall of Famer Terry Sawchuk as the Red Wings top netminder and remarkably, he was traded to the Blackhawks in the middle of that streak. He was nicknamed 'Mr. Goalie'.
4. Montreal Canadiens Hall of Famer Ken Dryden had a brother who was also an NHL goalie.

Answer: True

His older brother Dave played most of his career with the Blackhawks, Sabres, and Oilers.
5. Which goalie who went by the nickname "Bunny", was Ken Dryden's backup on Montreal's Stanley Cup winners from 1976-78?

Answer: Michel Larocque

Many NHL observers felt Larocque could have been the #1 goalie for many teams, but he had to "settle" for being Dryden's backup and collecting Vezina trophies and Stanley Cups. Rabbit Maranville was a Hall of Fame baseball player around the 1890s, Gilles Villemure was Ed Giacomin's backup with the Rangers, and Gilbert was Gerry Cheevers' backup with the Boston Bruins.
6. Who was the first Los Angeles Kings' goaltender to have their number retired in club history?

Answer: Rogie Vachon

Vachon rose to stardom and helped put hockey on the L.A. sports map before the arrival of Wayne Gretzky. Lessard was the Kings #1 goalie in the early 1980s, Hrudey was the #1 goalie on their 1993 Stanley Cup finalist, and Sawchuk was their first pick in the 1967 expansion draft.
7. Which of the following was notable about Rogie Vachon?

Answer: He never gave up a penalty shot goal in his career

Considered one of the best "one on one" goalies, Vachon never gave up a penalty shot goal in his career. He was rarely beaten on breakaways as well.
8. Which Philadelphia netminder helped the Flyers win back to back Stanley Cups in 1974 and 1975?

Answer: Bernie Parent

Parent won the Vezina trophy in 1974. The Flyers' organist would often play Elton John's "Bennie and the Jets", and Flyer fans would alter the words to "Bernie in the nets." Favell became the Flyers #1 goalie when Parent jumped to the WHA in 1972. Lindbergh was tragically killed in an auto accident, and Hextall played in the late 80s and 90s.
9. What was Chicago Blackhawks' Hall of Fame goalie Tony Esposito's nickname?

Answer: Tony-0

Tony-0 was a contraction of his full name, and also referred to the number zero, as in how many goals an opponent could expect to score against him. In the 1969-70 season, he had an amazing 15 shutouts. His brother Phil was a high scoring forward for the Bruins and Rangers.
10. Whicih goalie won the WHA's first Ben Hatskin award, which was awarded to the league's best goaltender.

Answer: Gerry Cheevers

Cheevers was known for the unique design on his goalie mask; he had stitches painted on for each time he was hit in the face with the puck. The Houston Aeros' Ron Grahame won the award in 1974, '75, and '77, while the New England Whalers' Al Smith won it in 1978. Parent won Vezina trophies as the NHL's top goalie, but not the Hatskin.
