Thomas was a member of the Catamounts from 1993 to 1997. During his time in Vermont, he helped the school get to the Frozen Four for the first time in program history in 1996. Thomas was teammates with Martin St. Louis, who would later become a star right wing despite not being drafted.

Thomas was the first person to win the Saving Grace, Vezina, Conn Smythe, and Stanley Cup honors in the same season.

He would also win two ESPY awards for Best NHL PLayer and Best Championship Performance.

The honor went to Brian Leetch, the future Hall of Fame defenseman for the New York Rangers, who also beat Vancouver in seven games and ended a long championship drought. After spending 1987 to 2004 with the Rangers, he was traded just prior to the deadline to Toronto. He did not play during the lockout and spent one final NHL season with Boston, scoring his 1000th career point.
