Thomas was a member of the Catamounts from 1993 to 1997. During his time in Vermont, he helped the school get to the Frozen Four for the first time in program history in 1996. Thomas was teammates with Martin St. Louis, who would later become a star right wing despite not being drafted.

In 1997, Thomas first played for the Bulls of the third-tier East Coast Hockey League. He played six games with the Bulls before a one-game stint with the Houston Aeros of the International Hockey League. He later went to Finland and spent parts of two seasons with HIFK.

Thomas was named to his first All-Star team after an injury to Martin Brodeur. The next season, he would win the Roger Crozier Saving Grace Award (best save percentage in NHL), William M. Jennings Trophy (teammates allowing fewest goals in NHL), and Vezina Trophy for best goaltender.

Thomas' .938 save percentage became an NHL regular season record, beating the .937 set by Dominik Hasek during the 1998-99 season. Thomas also set records for most saves during the playoffs (798) and during the Stanley Cup (238, while giving up a Cup-record 8), was named to his third All-Star game, won his second Vezina Trophy, and became the oldest winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy, the honor given to the Stanley Cup MVP. Thomas was the first person to win the Saving Grace, Vezina, Conn Smythe, and Stanley Cup honors in the same season.

He would also win two ESPY awards for Best NHL PLayer and Best Championship Performance.

The honor went to Brian Leetch, the future Hall of Fame defenseman for the New York Rangers, who also beat Vancouver in seven games and ended a long championship drought. After spending 1987 to 2004 with the Rangers, he was traded just prior to the deadline to Toronto. He did not play during the lockout and spent one final NHL season with Boston, scoring his 1000th career point.
