Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Three of these Hall of Fame greats wore the number 27 at one point in their careers. Which one did not?

Answer: Steve Carlton

Carlton wore the number 32 throughout his entire career of 24 seasons, mostly with the Cardinals and Phillies. Steve won four Cy Young awards and threw a Triple Crown in 1972. Fisk's number 27 was retired by the Red Sox, Hunter's 27 by the Athletics, and Marichal's 27 by the Giants.
2. The Major League World Series began play in 1903. In which season did the Pittsburgh Pirates make their first-ever World Series appearance?

Answer: 1903

The Pirates were there in 1903 under the helm of player-manager Fred Clarke. They met the AL Champion Boston Americans, and lost five games to three in the series. Pittsburgh's next World Series appearance was in 1909 in a win against the Tigers, a win in 1925 against the Senators, and a 1927 loss to 'Murderers Row' via the Yankees.
3. Who was the first player in baseball history to play in over an amazing 3000 games?

Answer: Ty Cobb

Amongst many other records set by Cobb, one was just inching past the 3000-game mark with 3035. Cobb retired in 1928 after 23 seasons. Yaz of the Red Sox was next on this list when he retired in 1983. Rose retired in 1986 with 3562 games under his belt.
4. The fiery Billy Martin played for numerous teams in the American League throughout his career. Which two National League teams did he play for?

Answer: Braves and Reds

Billy played from 1950-1961. In the American League he donned the uniforms of the Yankees, Athletics, Tigers, Indians, and Twins. In the final two seasons of his career, he played for the Reds and Braves. In 1969, Billy tried his hand at managing which did not work out well.

The only World Series that Billy Martin saw was with the Yankees from 1976-1978. In the two latter seasons, the Yankees won the World Series. Martin died on Christmas Day, 1989, a year after his final firing.
5. Who was the Angels' first-ever manager?

Answer: Bill Rigney

Rigney began managing the Angels' franchise in their first season in 1961, after taking the Giants from New York to San Francisco. His Giants' best finish was third. Bill could do no better than third place with the Angels also. Rigney was replaced in mid-season 1969 by Lefty Phillips.
6. Who was the first American League player to play at every single position during one game in the 1960s?

Answer: Bert Campaneris

The game took place on September 8, 1965. Bert's Kansas City Athletics went up against the California Angels. Campy started the game at shortstop, then eventually moved his way around. He replaced pitcher Jim Dickson in the top of the eighth inning, allowing one hit and one run. The Angels still won the game 5-3.
7. Which Major League umpire was selected to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010?

Answer: Doug Harvey

The others were all umpires and already inducted into the hall in the 1970s. Harvey umpired in the Major Leagues for 31 seasons from 1962-1992. Nicknamed "God" by the players, Doug umpired five World Series and six All-Star games. In the hall voting of 2008, Harvey fell one point short of induction.
8. Yankee pitcher Don Larsen threw a World Series perfect game in 1956. Who hit the only home run for the Yankees in that game?

Answer: Mickey Mantle

The others were not Yankee players in 1956 and other than Maris, never. Mantle's fourth inning shot in game five off Dodger pitcher Sal Maglie was the only run needed for the Yankees. In the sixth inning, Hank Bauer singled home Andy Carey for an insurance run. The Yankees won the series four games to three.
9. Who was the only batter to hit for a Triple Crown in the 1950s?

Answer: Mickey Mantle

They all hit for the coveted Triple Crown, but Mantle of the Yankees did it in 1956. He hit .353, hit 52 home runs, and had 130 RBIs. Mickey was also the first-ever switch-hitter to bat for the Triple Crown.

Answer: Ty Cobb

Cobb won all 11 of his crowns with the Detroit Tigers from 1907-1919. His season high was .420 in 1911. He also batted .401 in 1922, but finished second to George Sisler of the Browns. Willie Keeler won two batting titles, and Lajoie won five crowns.
