Answer: Oakland Athletics

In the first of three consecutive World Series rings, the A's defeated the Reds, four games to three. Tenace, a reserve first baseman, played only half the season. In the Series, he hit .440 along with four home runs. Where was Reggie? Although rostered with the A's in 1972, Jackson did not play in the Series. He was however, the 1973 World Series MVP.
2. In 1994, Tony Gwynn almost became the first player in over 50 seasons, to have a .400 batting average. He finished the season with which average?

Answer: .394

Gwynn, of the San Diego Padres, won his fifth of eight batting titles in 1994. Gwynn retired in 2001 after 20 seasons, all with San Diego. The last player before Tony to have this consistent season, was the great Ted Williams who batted .406 in 1941.
3. Roger Maris had a record breaking season of hitting 61 home runs in 1961. Who was the next player to reach the 60 plateau in a season, almost 40 years later?

Answer: Mark McGwire

A memorable moment in history in 1998, when McGwire smacked number 62, then hugged Maris' son who was in attendance. He went on to hit 70 in the season. Sosa also hit 66 in 1998.
4. In which year was Pirate Bill Mazeroski inducted into the Hall of Fame?

Answer: 2001

Mazeroski was active and playing during the other yearly options. Bill began his 17 season Pirate career in 1956 and retired in 1972. Although he won eight Gold Gloves at second base, he was most remembered for his bottom of the ninth, Series winning home run in 1960 against the Yankees. Maz was inducted in 2001 along with Hilton Smith, Dave Winfield, and the Twins' Kirby Puckett.
5. At which ballpark did the Los Angeles Dodgers play their home games during the 1980s?

After moving to Los Angeles from New York in 1958, the team played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. They moved into Dodger Stadium in 1962. The Dodgers continued to play in the legendary park throughout the century, and into the 2000s.

Answer: Cleveland Indians

Both the Giants and Cardinals were National League teams, and the Twins did not exist in 1954. The Indians, led by the bats of Al Rosen and Larry Doby, and the arms of Bob Lemon and Early Wynn, won 111 games in the season. They were heavily favored over the National League Champion New York Giants.

The Giants defeated the Indians four games to none, and allowed only nine Cleveland runs.
7. Which of the following teams did Billy Martin manage?

Answer: New York Yankees

Martin managed five teams throughout his managerial career, including Detroit, Minnesota, Texas, Oakland, and three World Series appearances with the Yankees. The on-again off-again feud between Martin and Yankee owner George Steinbrenner were well documented. Martin died at the age of 61 in 1989.
8. Which of the following never wore the number eight on their uniform?

Answer: Curt Flood

'Pops' of the Pirates, Berra of the Yankees, and the Yaz from Boston, all wore the number eight. Curt Flood wore the number 21 for the St. Louis Cardinals. Amongst Flood's greatest baseball feats, was his contributions to the creation of arbitration. Flood played for 15 seasons, retiring in 1971, and won seven Gold Gloves in the outfield.
9. The Astros began their franchise known as _________ ?

Answer: Colt .45s

The other options were all former Red Sox franchise names, which originated in Boston. The Houston Colt .45s entered the Major Leagues in 1962 along with the Mets. After three losing seasons under the management of Harry Craft, the name change to Astros took hold in 1965. The team went seven consecutive seasons losing 90+ games.
10. Which pitcher won the 2003 Major League strikeout crown?

Answer: Kerry Wood

The others were all winners, but more than 10 seasons earlier. Wood, in his fifth season with the Chicago Cubs, struck out 266 batters in the season. He was also the National League Rookie of the Year in 1998.
